Rucking Hell

I just want to talk about the potential cost of ruck failure in a game. And the reason you need a ruck who can touch the ball when it's in the air.

It's a problem for a team when their ruck cannot touch the ball in the air. But it's a disaster when the other side knows it especially at a CB.

This is why we can't just abandon rucks or play a ruck whose only game is secondary bounces, throw ins and actual football. Otherwise we would.

2016 Round 13, North Melbourne vs Hawthorn -

Third Quarter, 1:40 remaining (NM 50 - HAW 58)

Centre Bounce. Fat Boy McEvoy watchfully takes position under a good vertical bounce but doesn't/can't jump. Goldstein works past by 30cm and behind him, cleanly tapping to Dumont who forces a half-smothered handball through a block to Dal Santo. NDS handballs cleanly behind to Wells who chips to Goldstein on the spread. Goldstein by foot on to NDS who has half an hour on the edge of the arc to send the ball in. Almost bungled by NDS but Mason Wood takes a hanger and kicks the goal.

Third Quarter, 0:55 remaining (NM 56 - HAW 58)

Centre Bounce. Fat Boy McEvoy runs past the vertical line of another good bounce. Goldstein deftly steps around him. And taps it cleanly to Dumont, this time he cleanly handballs to NDS, quickly backwards by hand to Wells who sends a long low kick deep beyond the arc where Ben Brown gets a little under the ball. OOB.

Third Quarter, 0:48 remaining (NM 56 - HAW 58)

Boundary throw in. Goldstein runs Fat Boy under the ball a little, taking position to tap. Probably hearing a call from Harvey he lets it fall behind him. Wells gathers. Quick hands to Harvey. Behind.

From the kick in the Hawks brilliantly transitioned for a goal. Siren. But had Harvey kicked truly there would have been another CB.

Fourth Quarter, 20:00

Jon Ceglar contests. He jumps clean over the conspicuously hobbled Goldstein, tapping to a contest between Mitchell and Dumont.

It's a disaster when everybody knows your ruck can't touch the football when it's in the air. (We can look at Sandilands another time.)

Another disastrous win for Hawthorn.

Heh heh. Fair call. But it was going to be the other kind of disastrous if they'd kept Fat Boy in the ruck, Bill. He was getting reamed.

I think you need to keep two factors in mind:

1. As Dyer says, Goldstein is really struggling with injury but was still good enough to often win or influence ruck contests decisively, and

2. Norf won this game everywhere but on the scoreboard (and the post-match!!). It was their poor kicking for goal, and perhaps excessive aggression, which cost them a 3/5 goal victory.

It's always funny when people try and justify their stance with "yeah well if THIS happened and THAT happened I would be right"

Did you actually see any of the game, TT?

Or you could just have a look at the scores: 29 shots to 23. Many missed were quite 'gettable', and kept the Dawks in the game.

Hawks have had crap 'tap winning' ruckman last 4 years.

Hasn't stopped them monopolising premierships.

I think you're underestimating them, Lamby. I have described them before as serviceable; not great; far from best going around, but hardly 'crap.'

Good enough to win a share of HOs, halve others, but especially Hale, to go forward and be a threat too.

After that, a good midfield and FL/BL can take care of the rest.

I think they're about getting the minimum acceptable ruck standards, Lambchops. Not about getting flogged in the ruck. (Ceglar was soon sent back in after that little debacle.) They're interesting.

Bump

The demise of Maric and the mediocrity of Hampson should have been addressed at least 3 seasons ago.
Again, in recruiting threads we are talking up mids (Prestia et al) being next seasons saviours. I disagree.
I suggest Miles off year was in part to due to Hampson's lack of smarts and good taps.
IMO if we don't draft a proper ruckman that can play immediately in 2017 we will be bottom 4.

This should be priority number 1

whilst I don't disagree it would have been hard to address the mediocrity of Hampson 3 seasons ago given he has been with us for 3 seasons.

I suspect looking at Minson would be a back up plan in case Maric leaves but somewhere in the mix we need a young ruck for sure

Lobbe from Power. Mid 20s I think.

Yep you can guarantee blair wiil go back there again. Port will look to offload him with ryder coming back and you can see us throwing in a 2nd rounder

Vickery compensation pick.

Lobbe will be 28 at the start of next season. No way we should be getting another ruck in that age bracket, particularly for a second round pick. We've seen how quickly Ivan has declined since he hit 30, so we really need to be targetting a player who's about 22-23. Given his age I'd rather have Witts than Lobbe, though I'd rather Nankervis than either.
