Ruck - The most important position?

Agree. Ottens has always performed in the biggest games. Downhill skier?? Jeez there's some real crap being posted by on this site.

+1, Ottens is far from a downhill skier. Has had alot of injuries to contend with though.

Yeah, Ottens is almost Mr September.

Yep. Geelong managed him very well. They have him up and going when it counts.

You need a big beast of a ruckman in September who loves body contact.

ruckman unless they are elite ie Nic nat, Cox, Jamar et el...are otherwise a waste of space. Even though Jolly was stuffed, ottens and west never really got on top of him. GF Game was won by winning contested posession and strong mids.

Geelong will have to make the hard decisions in the comming weeks. They have five rucks all capable of playing seniors and only two positiions per week to give them, this is a great place for Geelong to be in but not for the ruckmen concerned. I belive that Geelong will have to move on one or two ruckmen this year or face a similar position when they lost Mumford to Sydney. Blake is the obvious one to move on first due to his deficiency around the ground in general play but would offer a new club good tap work in the ruck contest. Simpson will be there next season as he has just signed a two year deal so this leaves Ottens as the next obvious choice. If Geelong keep Ottens it will for a tilt at next years flag so one of either Vardy or West will have to suck it up in the two's next year which will create another Mumford situation. Geelong could offer either of these two on the open market this trade period and would have most clubs beat a path to their door offering either draft picks or quality player in exchange for a quality young ruck.

Geelong's delemia could be to Richmond's advantage as we are in the market for a seniors ready ruckman and I hope that we haven't already setteled for Maric as his deficiencies ar the same as Blake's.

Grant Thomas theory. I'd agree although change the elite part to good to very good.

Hence why chasing someone average like Maric is a waste of time (unless he comes basically nearly free).

For Collingwood their most important players were the likes of Pendlebury, Thomas, Cloke. For Geelong Bartel, Selwood, Hawkins. No ruckman there.

And yet in 2010 it was widely ackowledged that Jolly was a key to their flag. Not sure they would have got there with Wood. Reckon most premiers have had very good ruckman.

Agree on Maric though, would rather stick with the status quo and look at trading for a gun in 2013 when we are more of a chance to go deep in September.

I watched a replay of the Grand final again in the last couple of days . Ottens was directly responsible for 3 goals that geelong kicked with very strong physical work around the ground . He was much better than I gave him credit for watching the game live . There were however very few clearances directly from the hitout by either ruckman , they basically nullified each other which is why it came down to the medium sized clearance players and work the ruckman did around the ground . Our issue is that we lose many clearances because our rucks are so poor that we don't even nullify the opposition rucks .

Even a ruckman who can consistently break even and stop the 2-3 easy clearances a quarter from a stoppage we deal with I think that is a major gain . We have some very good clearance players ( Cotchin , Martin , Foley , Tuck ) but of the opposition keeps getting the ball on a plate it doesn't matter how good they are .

A upgrade ruckman who can make us competitive in the short term and a young ruckman who will be better than that being developed is what we need now . The second part is easier said than done of course .

Yeah and? Don't see your point. He was at least pretty good in 2010 so hence useful.
