Ruck - The most important position?

SCOOP said:
You can win a flag without a dominant ruck but it is very hard to win a flag if the other mob have a dominant ruck.

In a nutshell. Good post. In the premiership window make sure you get yourself a mature strong bodied lug who can at the very least nullify the opposition ruckman.

WCE (first)
Carlton (5)
Sydney (6)
Essendon (7)

these are the four clubs this year to finish in the top 8 ranklings (in brackets) for hit outs, and finished in the top 8 on the ladder

so ruck dominance doesn't factor for the top 3 clubs (also the last three premiers) Geelong Collingwood and Hawthorn

DDT you cannot just look at hit outs.

A bloke who can dominate hit outs is great but if they are useless around the ground forget it.

An allrounder like Cox/Naitanui/Mumford/Jamar/Ottens are worth their weight in gold. Marks around the ground, goals, dropping in the hole in front of forwards, etc, etc....

While the Hawks won a flag in 2008 they were very, very lucky. They were outclassed last night by a bunch of old men, with Ottens showing the way.

Jolly and Ottens dominated in the years their respective teams won flags.

Grant Thomas never believed in Ruckmen, he only got so far. You could strongly argue that if he did have a good ruckman he may well have won 2 prelims and given the Saints 2 cracks at a flag.

I have gone from a ruck sceptic , to a ruck agnostic to a ruck fan in the space of 2 seasons . It has come about for me by watching us get killed week after week by just 2nd tier ruckman . In the last 2 years ruckman such as Warnock , Seaby and Brogan have played enormous games agaisnt Richmond and not done much else .
It may not be the most important position on the field in the AFL because without quality in the midfield a winning ruckman will only take you so far but to me it is the most important for us to fix .

On Jolly. He has unquestionably been a topline Ruck for a number of years. Until this year.

He has dropped off big time. Think his knee is shot. Currently gone from a top 5 ruck to possibly only Gus being a worse No 1.

Collingwood will really struggle to win the flag with Jolly in his current plight as their leading ruck. Great to see. ;D

I am a bit shocked how quickly Jolly has declined, especially in the latter half of the year.

Knee apparently shot.

See West Coast trading the same prem odds as before their defeat today. Got out with no loss.

A bet to nothing. Unfortunately didn't come off.

Don't think it will hurt them too much. Still favourites to win the flag for mine, with our without Jolly playing well. Geelong close 2nd.

Geelong Pies grand final near certainty now.

Wouldnt be so sure.

Have seen what Ottens did to a ruck in better form than Jolly last night.

Yeah your logic was very sound. Only risk is if they got blown off the park. If Cox is ok then they should beat Carlton or Essendon. Doubt they could beat Geelong though.

Geelong Collingwood granny looks a near certainty.

Agree, you would think so.

Pies perhaps not totally across the line if Buddy can get back fully fit.

I would predict the colliwobbles to hit, we are in September. They have only won when the GF is in October. Geelong will win comfortably

Yeah, but this year the GF is in October again.

Swans have a chance against the Pies if they can get past Hawthorn (which they should). Only lost to Pies by 6 and 14 during the year.

Still think that with all of the talk of Zac Clarke we would be mad not to talk to Essendon about Tom Bellchambers. With Hillie & Ryder locked in, I think he may be ripe for the picking, new contract or not.

No doubt in my mind that you don't go deep in the 8 without a big strong ruckman. You even need a more then capable back up.

couldnt agree anymore, if we are to fix the problem with our ruck, we nee to get a good one. I cant see us getting a good ruckman without giving away pick 14 or a Foley or Edwards.
