Ruck - The most important position?

No surprise that the four winning sides had the dominant ruckman.

Ottens, Jolley, Mumford, and warnock all dominated their opponents.

Swans have a chance against the Pies if they can get past Hawthorn (which they should). Only lost to Pies by 6 and 14 during the year.

On the MCG, Collingwood will break margin records against them. We beat them by 8 goals!
Theyre another side that can't play on the G.
Where were the swans in 95 & 2001? Rubbish side!!

It isn't just the tap work. The ruckman is almost your Queen in chess. As about the only bloke who can go where he pleases without an opponent he can

1. Drop in the hole in front of forwards.
2. Have him free in the centre and the the opponent can't go through the corridor, or move him a kick behind play to deny the long kick
3. He is you main target on kick-ins, and the main way to defend kick-ins
4. Provide a long-bomb target up forward that you can rove to
etc

A smart hardworking ruckman can be one of your best 10 players without ever appearing on the TV screen.

Good posting Annie Lennox.
Can add blocking for team mates and most importantly clearance work.
NikNat for example doesn't just stop once he's jumped at the ball, he becomes another mid as soon as the ball hits the ground.

Looking at his stats is Maric much of an improvement on Gus? Does he do any of the above? Stats wise he is behind Gus who is at least improving his average hitouts year to year. Are we all blinded by the fact that Gus just shows so little want and agression at times?

I hope Maric isn't a lock. We should be at least investigating Hampson, Nicholls and the delisted Brisbane Rucks. I liked the look of McCauley in the game I saw him play. Griffin would be another but unsure if he would come to Melbourne.

Tomorrows Grand Final will be indicative of "Ruck - The most important position".

The team that wins the ruck tomorrow will more than likely win the flag.

Ottens/West should hopefully overcome an injured Jolly/Wood.

Comeon Tigers forget Maric and throw everything at Zac Clarke, he and TV will give us an enormous advantage and is young enough to grow with our cubs.

A Ruckman is nothing without someone to give the ball too.

When we needed to have the comp pick in the draft it was that year when Nick Nat and Cotchin were in he draft.
Wallace was picking up cheap wins, instead of thinking of the future. Natnui was a star before he was recruited, I can remember his name being mentioned a year before he was drafted.
We should become like Chelsea and buy want we require,
Nick nat, Harry Taylor, Selwood and kerr

Natanui wasn't the same draft as Cotchin. We got a ruck in the year Natanui was drafted, Vickery, who took Natanui to the cleaners in the U18 GF.

Sorry, but nick nat in our side would be sensational.
I think nick nat is a bit more valuable then the Vicks!

Jury is still out on this i would think.. Vickery is playing a more important team role than nicnat who gets a lot of help from Cox at present.. i'll wit until Cox isnt playing and see how Nic goes then..

Natanui's highlight reel is great. Vickery does more, will do more and will be more valuable by the time both reach their peak in 3 or so years

It will really hurt if Ottens ends up being a triple premiership ruck man which he more than likely will be.

Why? he didnt want to be at Richmond anyway and he has improved his game so much at Geelong, i wish him the best.. As i do with Krak

Agree . The only thing that hurts is the two wasted picks we got for him.

Our club foolishly didn't value him that's why he left.
Given our ruck woes since it was one of the dumber decisions we have made. Anyways that's my opinion.

That was the Vic Metro vs WA final I think. I don't think Nicnat played TAC Cup.

Yep, thats what I meant. As for getting Natanui we never had a chance.

Agree. He basically said, "I want to play more in the ruck", the club were in love with their twin towers set-up with Richo, so Ottens found a club that saw a role for him that interested him more. No doubt he's been the big winner
