Round 2 - changes to the team. Richmond v GWS

In my opinion we need to replace 2 roles -

1 ‘run up and run back’ - the lambert role - Rioli is ripe for this, so is castagna (though the thought horrifies me when it comes to kicking it), Ross is fit enough but not quick - 2 players running the corridor all day.

2 ‘get the ball and farm it out’ RCD, Dow, maybe Ross, stack in bursts I don’t think Martyn is all that good.

I’d like to see Mansell back for Rioli, stack in for aarts, Rioli jr for Riewoldt (just pure harassment all day if fit enough) kmac/Pickett on the wings

Prestias great value is he does both roles all day very effectively. Hard to replace with one player
Young rioli at this stage isn't up to vfl standard, hes miles of a game, lack of footy in past years is showing.
Our best up and down the ground runners are Macintosh, prestia,Lambert,
We got a quarter out of them only.
Cotch is in his last year ,so I would target green with a 5 year offer,
It would cost us our 1st plus norths pick 20 but he's young and a huge upgrade .

One thing Jack always did was identify the ball drop early and get into position early. He could use his body to shield the area. he had his leap. He had much better hands. His marking decline is the biggest thing for me.

Some stats around his marking show this.

2021 he was 5th on the goal kicking and 33rd on contested marks
2020 he was 4th & 11th
2019 he was 44th & 73rd (13 games)
2018 he was 1st & 5th
2017 he was 6th & 15th
2016 he was 9th & 9th

His superior smarts enable him to kick goals last year.
He's also changed rolls whereby he doesn't get as many opportunities now and goes to the flanks more .

Have to get smarter and chase free agents with mega offers and still go to the draft

Our game is based on the fact that possessions gained through interception or turnover lead to more efficient chains of possession that do winning contested possessions. It's a better use of energy and I agree with it. We need players to put immediate pressure on the first possession won under contest and the next possession. Those players have traditionally been Lambert, Graham, Prestia, Edwards and to a lesser extent Cotchin and Martin. We are missing two - but immediate replacements don't come to mind. Pickett into the middle? He has hurt factor - and is a human hunter. Stack? Castagna? They need to be quick, strong and bloody minded. And don't mind running with it going our way. But they don't need to be accumulators.

In other words, I couldn't care less if Cripps has 100 more contested possessions than our whole side - so long as he or the blokes he gives it off to have 0% disposal efficiency.

Our focus has to be on both the primary and secondary possessions from stoppage this week, if you don't pressure that 2nd possession then our turnover game can't kick in.

I'd go:

B Grimes Tarrant Broad
HB Short Gibcus Rioli
C McIntosh Pickett Ross
HF Martin Balta Baker
F Edwards Lynch Castagna
R Nank Bolton Cotchin
I/C Soldo Graham RCD Stack

I like the idea of pushing Pickett into the middle, whether that is purely for pressure or to also hunt the ball. I think we also need RCD in there (assuming he is fit, otherwise give Dow a crack - Sonsie probably still a few weeks away).

Castagna can float back onto a wing to cover interchanges. I like Shedda and Stack inside the forward 50 and I want Bolton around the ball.

So this is

In Stack, RCD, Kmac
Out Riewoldt, Prestia, Aarts

Question mark obviously over Nank.

Well explained, first time I have understood why it was a strength of ours in 3 out of 4 GFs being second to contested plays!

The simple fact for me we can't ignore is that we need to inject new blood to the side.I love our champion players , but we cannot hold on to them forever the change of guard has to come we will better for it now then leaving it to late.We know we don't have the next Cotchin or Edwards doesn't mean we don't play our kids.

What is the question mark over Nank?

I just watched the last quarter of the Carlton and Richmond game . I actually had to watch it twice to ensure I had this right. Clearly the umpiring cruelled us. However, our biggest issue was our Ruck positions set up! What a debacle, calamity, disgrace or whatever you wanted to call it. At the game I wondered why Balta was rucking late in the game. The truth was because Nankervis and Soldo combined probably had the worst 15 minutes of football we could ever have seen. I suspect Hardwick knew this and made a change. However, Balta made the same learned mistakes. It was a complete shemozzle of the highest order. On every occasion they came in on the wrong angle and gifted Carlton's mids the ball. Nank is a captain but failed horribly. Sorry but have to call it out. We really need a good hard look at Ruck positions or angles or we will continue to get smashed like that in periods of games. I encourage any of you to watch the last quarter and focus on the Ruckman set up...

Not very happy reading there.
Surely Vlastuin would be doubtful with his injury.
Am I being too much to the dark side here, as it seems we are heading for some bad times.
Injuries, lack of midfield players of any quality, ruck problems, and so it goes on.
Nick Vlastuin (hamstring) - Unavailable (medium-term)
Kane Lambert (hip) - Unavailable (TBC)
This as at the 15th of March.
Also, this sobering report today.

- There were plenty of injuries out of round one, but none were more disappointing than THIS one
- Once a mighty midfield, it is now showing signs of not being able to keep up to speed with the absolute best
- Tigers have 'a lot of work to do, and a lot of their players are going to need to get back into form'

I think Ross plays wing because he is so one paced and not explosive over the first 5 metres that he is a liability in the centre square bounces. A bit like Cogs towards the end of his career. With 6-6-6 I think the club see him as a liability in the centre.

Problem is he isn't a wingman but he just won best trainer over the pre season so they want to reward that.
