Round 2 - changes to the team. Richmond v GWS

Yeh, I'm looking forward to watching Balta & Lynch as the 2 key forwards.

And surely our ruck combo won't be beaten as comprehensively again?
Yeah, without Jack we may see the evolution of our next key forward in Noah.

Don’t wish Jack away too soon. Very few forwards read the ball as well as he does. He’s never been quick either, but that’s also common with many other key forwards over time including Hudson.

He is also a slow starter, never really sets the world on fire in first few rounds.

I am not concerned about Jack Riewoldt.

I'm concerned at the lack of midfield and a seeming lack of urgency through the side to compete for the game.

Last Thursday against the Blues was the same as 2021 but with an apparantly better, fitter outfit on the park.

100% - our problems are all midfield - lack of quality players in that role plus structure at centre bounces (always seem to be confronted by bigger bodies/clearance merchants).

I can only assumed we rolled dice with our ageing and injury prone midfield stars plus the likes of RCD, Ross, Dow etc who don’t look anything other than average players. Need to pull rabbits out of hats now for 2022.

Stack debuted without much footy against the Gee Whiz in 19 ............... stick him in this week.

Out - Dion, JR8, Aarts

In - Stack, Grover (if fit), RCD

If Caddy is fit, I'd consider bringing him in too.

I am not really enthused with Ross on a wing he must play inside this week, if not there is no point him playing.

Brown and The Sonz will be fast tracked if that garbage from Thursday night keeps up, in fact I think Brown is on the cusp as it is.

Those wanting RCD in next week , did they actually watch him in the VFL on Thursday ?
Think he will be lining up against Southport next week , not GWS . Didn’t look real fit either

One thing Jack always did was identify the ball drop early and get into position early. He could use his body to shield the area. he had his leap. He had much better hands. His marking decline is the biggest thing for me.

Some stats around his marking show this.

2021 he was 5th on the goal kicking and 33rd on contested marks
2020 he was 4th & 11th
2019 he was 44th & 73rd (13 games)
2018 he was 1st & 5th
2017 he was 6th & 15th
2016 he was 9th & 9th

His superior smarts enable him to kick goals last year.

Actually had a padding brace around his ribs . Kinda makes it hard to get from contest to contest

Having had bruised ribs, Riley is brave playing with them.
Absolutely very difficult to play with bruised ribs, or damaged cartledge.

From memory bruised ribs suffered by Grimes in a collision with Nank in the season opener last year from memory slowed Dylans start to the season took him a few weeks to get right.

I suspect Grimesey might have had a touch more damage than bruising though.

Prestia & Jack out so got to fill them with players that are not new boys on the block. Stack (time to redeem himself) & Parker who is just as tough & versatile as Robbo at the Lions. Kmac looks like being ready so Aarts out. Backline I would plonk Baker back on a flank with him rotating with Rioli.

Nank getting scans and I'll be waiting nervously to see Soldo out on the training track

Need someone in to replace Dion that will actually win the ball at the contest, and need a lot more from Cotch, Graham, Edwards etc.

Ironically, in the past we haven't focused much on contested possessions but stats don't lie.
