Robbie Tarrant

Does anyone else think bringing Tarrant over has already shown to be failed exercise??

Depends what you compare it to. A failure is compared to what the opportunity cost would be of an alternative scenario. I still reckon Tarrant (even if primarily for the off field impact) will likely be better than whatever the alternative was. I mean what did we pay for him? Probably very little in the CCJ deal, how much are we paying him? I doubt its huge, but he got the 2nd year.

Its only a fail if the alternative was a lot better.

Its like arguments about draftees, x player is crap, but if there weren't obvious other players that could have been picked at that time, then what did we actually lose out on.

Yep. Possibly.

I’m not suggesting he should, (for that very reason), just wondering whether he will.

Not when a another year is locked in contract wise.

Can't recall when that has ever happened. Takes a lot more to walk away from and also negotiate club wise.

Don’t think we’re paying him much. Could probably earn as much as an assistant if he could land a job and that was what he wanted to do. But yes, otherwise unlikely.

I don't think so. Tarrant was brought in to replace Astbury for a couple of years and give us breathing space to develop young key backs. No-one could have predicted that we would not only get a very good key back in the draft but also that he would play just about every week in his first year. Gibcus is miles ahead of where we would have expected a newly drafted player to be. Biggie is still developing and, while it is great to see he is debuting this week, likely in and out of the seniors while he deals with the step up to AFL. Miller looks fine but sill not a certainty, I'm not sure what he needs, maybe it is confidence, or a bit more mongrel, but at the moment I see Miller as the classic player who is too good for VFL but not good enough for AFL (that said, he needs to improve his VFL form at the moment). Miller is not a bust but can he become a success? Who knows.

Tarrant was a wise move, even if he doesn't end up playing lots of games it was the right thing to recruit him.

Nope he has been and will continue to be a valuable back-up when Grimes or Balta miss
Correct. Insurance.

The fact Gibcus and now possibly Biggie coming on quicker than expected is the added bonus.

We shouldn’t also underestimate the value Tarrant brings in teaching these kids.

A blend of quality experience and youth is how you fast track a mini rebuild on the run.

Didn't need hindsight to know that recruiting 32 year olds is not a great idea. Couldn't have predicted the rise of Gibcus but we already had Miller and Biggie.

It's a long season. Our midfield made our whole backline look crap. 3 x 100 point games. That's not just on one player. We may need him before the season is out.
He did look slow, but maybe that's slow to adapt to our structures and being caught in no-man's land, I don't know.
Ask the same question in Rd 22.

Even if it turns out a failure in hindsight, it was a risk worth taking if we want one last roll of the dice.

Maybe Tarrant is a key reason for the quick development of Gibcus and big improvement in Biggie? Perhaps that was part of his mandate in joining if he’s looking for a coaching gig after his playing days?

It’s not a failure in my eyes as overall, we have better options over the course of a long season.

Is this another case of classic hindsightism (calling it a failure after 8 games)?

There was hardly a word against his recruitment from the start and all through the preseason (and I for one thought we’d achieved a significant coup in getting him).

Sure it hasn’t gone as well as he and we would like and maybe he won’t play many more games - but I'm not writing his recruitment off as a failure at this stage.

Damned if you do - damned if you don’t.

I think Tarrant has been unlucky to a degree. Dropped into a totally new system, dealing with a hip issue, often played without our two most experienced defenders (Grimes and Vlastuin), Gibcus and Nyuon's improvement being quicker than expected.

Tarrant is an interesting one.

Would be on 500k a year for sure, hopefully 2nd yr is incentive based.

Its interesting how the trade period is before the draft, not sure we would have taken Tarrant if we knew we would of gotten Gibcus, maybe yes, maybe no.

Thing is Tarrant has been unlucky, Biggie Gibcus and Miller have all made big steps forward,

Would be great for all parties to trade him back to Nth or loan him him back if the system allowed.

Would have to be a spate of injuries for him to come back in you would of thought, tough for him.

We tried to play him, but it stuffed the team up, Balta going back has been better for everyone

Miller and Biggie were speculative at best. And we were never to know we were getting Gibucs and how good he would be so early in his career.

You are making the statement of recruiting Tarrant as a bad idea based on hindsight.

No I'm not. Recruiting 32 year olds is never a good idea.
