Robbie Tarrant

Dare I say it, already surplus to best 22 needs
Quite fair comment actually
Reality is that six weeks ago many people (self included) would not have slotted in Gibcus as a permanent fixture already.
Right now though with Balta playing back - Tarrant has slipped back in the pecking order.
That’s not to say he wont be needed at all though.

Gibcus has been outstanding to date but it's a long season and he's still a kid. Winter is coming.

Tarrant may yet fill a need when the young gun needs a breather down the stretch.

Maybe...

Right from the start I have never been a fan of Tarrant and thought I saw his deficiencies (mainly age related) but many shouted me down. Now people, me included, see Josh Gibcus has gone past him like a whirlwind so maybe his use will come later in the season when injuries and tiredness creeps in on the regulars but right now I don't see a place for him in the 1sts .

Getting Tarrant was part of a plan to spread risk and strength in order to attack for a preeemiership.

At the end of the year we can quibble about which of our failures was of less consequence. If things go somewhat to plan.

They have to leave Noah back with Grimes and they cant keep chopping and changing.

Gibbus is flying, and Tigga and Broad are incumbants and pillars.

There is not a spot for Rob this week unless they move Noah out, will the MC be stubborn and do it.

If Balta is playing down back, I don't think Tarrant plays at all. And I don't think he's anywhere near as poor as some think.

The wat some are speaking about him, it sounds like his opponents have torn us up throughout the season. He started the season very well.

Excellent against McKay in Round 1
Excellent against Hogan in Round 2
Other than 1 quarter which was more the midfield lack of pressure, was very good on King
Naughton was a bit more of a battle
Walker beat him comprehensively in Round 5
Did ok on Brown / Weiderman in Round 6

The way some are talking is that he is a massive reason why we have lost 4 games this year which is untrue and quite disrespectful. I agree that he hasn't given us much from an offence POV out of the back 50, but his primary job as a stopper is to keep his opponents quite which largely he has done, bar Adelaide.

The team balance looked better on Friday night as both rucks impacted the game but in other games, it may be better having Tarrant in the team and Balta partnering with Nank (mainly against better running teams than the Eagles).

I don't think he will come back in next week, purely because of balance and they will maintain having Soldo in, but indicating that people never want him playing again seem to be a bit of an over reaction from some, but I guess thats what PRE does best.

Let Robbie spend some time getting his fitness and confidence back in the VFL, he may have some important footy to play down the track.

Also re the St Kilda game, Grimes went down early third quarter from memory. Our matchups didn't look right after that.

Tend to agree with you Posh, the talls generally should be a horse for courses decision for match committee. Some games 2 dedicated rucks will work, sometimes we'll need a gorilla full back, some games we may need Balta forward. I think flexibility may be the best way going forward.

At Norf in days of yore Robbie played unaccountable and high. A bit like Reputation McGovern but working wider. And pushing back harder in his best moments.

Very soft until he got confidence in his body. But classy with the ball and capable of getting air and with sure hands.

Robbie (35yo?) ran under the ball last time he played for Richmond. Ouch. We're not talking about 19yo rookie kpps here. Or other developing players. (We've got quit a few. Good. Upside.) He was disappointing.

Robbie can get air and get there. We may play him higher. (Smart imo.) But we've gotta get him right. More about confidence than engagement IMO.

Importantly, Tarrant can push back from high on Balta/Gibcus formations. We can get this right. And if we do Noah can get on the gallop. And Godcus can send out his laser beams.

We were following the Dawks game plan thinking that the Tarrant experiment would give the same result as when the Dawks got Brian Lake :cupgold:cupgold
Probably not. More likely following the Tigers thinking that the Chaplin experiment would provide a reasonable result. We're a lot better now than at the end of 2012. If he's not needed, then it's quite a promising scenario.

Last night we unveiled the best backline in the league. That line up needs to build momentum.
Not sure where Tarrant fits in.
Yeh there’s something very re assuring about having Grimes/Vlas/Balta/Broad/Baker in the backline. Add young gun Gibcus and it’s fearsome. Tarrant doesn’t fit at this stage.

Agree with a lot of this but with Walker, when he is playing well, Tarrant is not the greatest match up. Walker leads well and into space, when a forward leads they have a break on their opponent, it is the structure which combats this not their opponent. With a good leading forward what you need is a player who can compete in a contested situation and players who can come in to intercept/spoil when the forward makes a lead. The direct opponent will almost never be able to follow a leading forward because they don't know where they are going or when, just a split second makes a difference. I always remember that spoil Rance did in front of Walker in the 2017 GF, showed just how hard it is to stop a leading forward. The other issue, of course, is that you need to stop the delivery from the centre, the leading forward can only make a lead if the mids have the opportunity to kick it to them - prevent, or make that kick under massive pressure, and you have a fair bit of the problem solved.

Tarrant still playing in LoL Norf mode. Old saying "you cannot change a pigs ear into silk purse ". To old to change from low gear to high.

What is Tarrant's strength nowadays? He always had good aerial presence from his Norf days. And seemed a pretty safe distributor.

It aint kicking/distribution nor his one on one ability from the sample size this year. Its his giving away of obvious frees in the one on one battles that has stood out to me. He may be the only key defender with more frees against than for. And significantly. Small sample size but not a great start.

I reckon he struggled big time v Melbourne. He started on Brown who had 5 disposals and a goal before we had to move young Gibcus onto him quickly because Brown was cutting up. (Gibcus then did a great job on Brown). Tarrant finished up on Weideman who also also got on top of him kicking 2 goals in the second half on him. One tackle for the game.

He's struggled this year. He looks incredibly slow. He's getting beaten badly on the lead and is a non-factor when the ball hits the ground.

Yep, at this stage he's a back-up. He can on-field coach Biggie and Miller until we need him. That's valuable.
