Richo

We have lost a family member with this news...

God only knows what will happen to this club next year with memberships, attendance, etc...any soft c**ks on our list better think twice before giving less than 100% next year...I am angry right now and hope this announcement brings something good out of the obvious bad...

As for Richo, to call him a true champion on and off the field is an understatement...words can't get close to explaining what this guy is and meant to the RFC...superstar in every sense of the word who can never, ever be replaced...

The club better do the right thing and give him some sort of send off amd testimonial that’s bigger than ben hur and not this “car driving around the G” garbage...oh yeah, and they better retire the no.12 for a long, long time, if not forever...

I am privelaged to have seen him in the flesh from his first to his last game, and nearly all in between.

RICHO 4 LIFE!!! :hearton

What a champion he's been!
So much pleasure and emotion brought to so many supporters.
Thanks Richo.
And good luck for the future.

I don't know what to say.

I have this feeling of a loss. It actually feels like a family member has gone. I didn't think I would take it this hard.

I am shattered. I only remember Richmond with Richo. I grew up with Richo and he was an idol to me, both on field, and certainly off the field.

A genuine bloke, the best you would ever meet.

I am shattered. I seriously feel numb. Matthew Richardson represented a lot to every follower of our club, he was the shining light and something to hold onto and be proud of.

Now that he has gone it is going to be a new Richmond. A new era most certainly.

Forever Richo!

As a kid I ran around with the famous no.4 of Royce Hart on my back. I love Royce Hart. But Richo is my all time favourite Tiger. Gave his absolute all for the club. Shame his 17 seasons are amoungst the darkest in our clubs history. The very best of luck for the future big fella, you're a Tiger through and through.

thank you for being who you are. You brought us lots of excitement, from taking hangers, breaking packs, kicking long goals and missing some simple ones. You are a great servant to the club, the kids, mothers and us old guys, love you to bits. A great player in a decade of middle of road team, you shone your light.

One thing that sticks in my mind forever is your generous time given to us fans. I remember back in TW's first season, a week before round 1, a practice game for the fans at punt road, after the players were long gone into the dressing room, you continued (a hour later) to sign and be part of photos shoots. Nothing was too difficult for you when it came to give something back to the Tigers fans.

Thanks alot and look forward to your farewell dinner.

I am 55 years old, lived through the Royce era, but Richoman has to be the greatest legend in my time. I hope Richo reads these. I have castigated my 16 year old daughter for preferring a B grade foxtel movie over watching the AFL highlights and for not reviewing these posts. I likened it to not going to my funeral because there was a chick flick on. OTT I know, but this is one of the most momentus occasions in tiger history over the last 20 years. Richo, if you read this, thanks very much for the memories. You brought us joy, hope, and comedy on occasions, but always respect for your passion and effort for the yellow and black. Cant wait for the send-off. :clap

It had to happen one day, but it's an absolute shame its happened before he could have reached 300 games. It would have also been fitting for Richo to have one last chance to go out in a team that is progressing positively upwards as opposed to some of the shambolic sides that he's played with.

I've been a Richmond supporter my whole 44 years and he'd easily be in the top 5 I've seen at the club - right up there with Bartlett, Bourke, Rioli, Roach etc. For the depressing last 16 years, he's been one of the few reasons to still go to the football each week. His contested marking, athleticism, competativeness and absolute committment and passion for the club on and off the field were his outstanding qualities for mine. He's also done countless things off-field both to promote the club and contribute to charities/causes on a voluntary basis for persons in need or with serious illness, especially kids. In the fishbowl of AFL, to keep such a perspective of life is perhaps even more commendable than his considerable playing achievements.

In an era where AFL is a big business and as supporters you often wonder whether players hurt as much as we do as to plight of our once great club, you always knew that Richo felt just like we did. He played like we would if we could - with a true love of the club. As a supporter, you can't ask for more than that. It is sad that we won't see him play again in the No. 12. However all things must pass.

Good luck to him in his life post playing. It's been a thrill and honour to witness a great career. We haven't had many Champions over the past 27 years, but he's one.

I am a firm believer that no one is irreplaceable. Richo is the exception to this rule. Some one may come along & kick 60 goals per year, but no one will give us the package of goals, marks, passion & character that Richo has. Has to be my favourite player after watching the Tiges since early 70's & a very sad day. Enjoy retirement big fella - you've earned it. :'(

You were the man. Gave it your all. I hope you enjoy working in the media and promoting our great club.

Richo,Richo
With Hope in your Heart
And you'll Never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on walk on.

I'm not a Liverpool fan but thought this was approriate.

Well said mate, amongst many other fitting tributes on here...

Really sad we didn't get to see Richo go around one last time...

What a fantastic, charismatic, talented, inspirational player he was. I'm so disappointed Richo didn't get to play more finals as he justly deserved (was it only 2001 he played in, being injured in 1995?) Through the darkest days of the club, he has been one of the only reasons to front up week in, week out. That leap, that mark and who will ever forget the heart breaking kicking. Richmond through and through.

I'll miss him terribly, but in some ways it lifts the veil on the future. It's time for other "Richo's" to emerge and we can only hope that they are worthy enough to stand in his shadow.

Vale Matthew Richardson, a true Tiger and ultimately a magnificent clubman.

my richo memorabilia just doubled in value overnight.... thanks for the memories big fella :clap
you were a once in a generation player... all the best for the future RICHOOOOO!!!!!

ps. i called this a couple of months ago before i was crucified by most of you on here and then the thread was deleted.
i accept all your apologies in advance ;)

He epitomises what football is about for me...entertainment. He will be sorely missed, but am very glad I was around to see the very best (and sometimes the comically worst) of the great Richmond man. My kids will hear Richo stories from me for the rest of their days! Good luck in the future Richo, and congrats on a great career :clap

Sorry no chocolate cookies are left.

I'm just gutted... so long Richo, your a champion and superstar. Thanks for the memories.

Like others I am so gutted that Richo has retired. Many others have talked of having the No.4 on their back as kids in the 70s and i was one of them - Royce Hart was an absolute champion. But I can't think of a greater Tiger than Richo both on and off the field. Such a humble bloke off the field and a passionate, competitive champion on the field. When I think of Richo I am reminded of the words of a hit song from a few years ago "you must be some kind of superstar" He was one of kind and will be sorely missed by us all.
