Richmond 2017 AFL Premiers

Watching Flea on Open Mike talk about Balmey, made me really think if we would have won the flag without NB , I know it’s been mentioned before, but without legends like Neville Crowe keeping the club alive and Richo giving a glimmer of hope on field, 2017s drought breaking Premiership may well have never happened.

So many behind the scenes legends who made it all happen.

Was up in the middle of the night so flicked it on again, I don’t think there’s ever been a better team performance, everybody involved got it right on the day, even me only clapping goals with odd number claps

What always saddens me about Flea is that he experienced more bad than good from our club (maybe the 1980 flag dilutes it a bit). Really sad we were strong for 3 years and then deteriorated so quickly from 1982 onwards.

I still can't believe Sheahan making a pathetic comment like that to Flea on Open Mike. Who employed his daughter!!!

Spoke with an ex-player who is still around the club a bit, and he reckons Balme changed everything from the moment he walked in. Basically said that it would not have happened without him.
Have to seriously come under consideration to be made a legend of the club at some stage.

I didn’t mind Mikes honesty , however enjoyed the Flea jumped straight on him about it.

A lot of interstate people are going to be grumbling into their cereal this morning!

hahaha.
But honestly they should request more games at the G throughout the year when playing Melb based teams.
But all was well when for a number of years interstate teams won the GF let alone constantly making the GF.

It all became a problem only when we won...... GOOD ! hahaha

My jaw dropped when watching footy classified when Crutchy asked the panel if Port were the best side. Hymie said No, Tiges better

Juddy of course said the two Sydney clubs are the benchmark and BTW Kruezer is No 3 ruck in the league. Our premiership really hurts ;D
Kruezer may be no 3 in the league on the rare occasions that he's fit enough to take the field. Judd's pumping up a mate's tires there. i fail to see how a team that has lost the past 2 prelims can be a benchmark. Maybe lolnorf were the benchmark back in 2016.

Has talk.of best of 3 GF's just been since we won or is just me theyre bringing it up everyday

When eagles won their 2 quickly followed by crows back to back there were Death of Vic Football ? Headlines. Then lions, port swans and eagles again....the 90s and 00s were owned by interstate clubs. And it hasn't exactly been a drought this decade .., only 2 all Vic GFs.

after 6 consecutive flags last decade, I remember us Victorians complaining that the intestate teams were too dominant, and that they had an unfair home ground advantage due to stadium rationalisation in Victoria.

That's true... Only the cats would have a marked advantage in Victoria. Battle of the co-tenants happen several times a round these days.

In terms of having to travel interstate, there is no advantage/disadvantage to any team.
You have to remember that when you play in your home state, you need to consider whether or not your opponents are from interstate or not.
Vic teams: 5/6 games at home against interstate opposition (advantage). About 11 at home against home state opposition (no advantage). 5/6 interstate (disadvantage).
Non-Vic teams: 10 games at home against interstate opposition (advantage). 2 at home against home state opposition (no advantage). 10 interstate (disadvantage).
The "no advantages" don't count and the advantages and disadvantages cancel each other out.

Agree with the general equality this means but I would reframe as to where the crowd as an impact on umpiring decisions. Clearly where one side dominates the crowd and the stadium is full this has an impact. WCE and Geel see a significant home free kick advantage and I can’t remember stats but wouldn’t be surprised if similar for Adelaide. It is typically the frees not paid to the travelling side that cause the issue. This means WCE will get a bigger advantage against us in WA than we get against them at the G and is probably worth a couple of goals. For teams that don’t have intimidating crowds and fill stadium the effect will be less.

There is good science/psychology behind this demonstrated in soccer when crowds were banned for a season I think and you could see the yellow / red card bias against away teams disappear.

On the flip we had this effect working for us against Geelong and GWS in the finals series last year and seemed to get ‘a reasonable run’

while I agree with all of this, there is one variable you have missed. We play in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, etc, no more than 2 times per season (just once on most occasions), but West Coast, Adelaide, et all, play in Melbourne half a dozen times (if not, more). They are more used to playing here than we are used to playing over there. Further to that, we have a home game against Sydney at Etihad in R15. We play 3 games at Etihad all season whereas Sydney play 5 games at Etihad.

Just been overseas, thought I'd share the love:
