Rich V Carl - Match Day Thread

When we’re getting a centre clearance smashing like in the last 1/4 tonight, why not throw Balta in as a big bodied mid, even Castagna, just to give it a different look?

We just stayed with the same rotations almost to the end when Pickett went in. Surely you try everything when it goes pear shape.
That last quarter was just staggering. We got obliterated out of the centre and at stoppages.

Pretty hard for your backline to hold up when you’re losing centre clearances and stoppages like that, and such that the inside 50’s are 17-1, as they were at one stage in the last quarter.

I don't think you can do that. You need natural midfielders, blokes who can read the play and know where the ball is going and extract it when it's in a clinch. Those two couldn't do that.

Unfortunately we have very few options left in that area now. The champs who did it in the past are old and/or injured and I feel we have neglected drafting true midfielders so there is not much coming through to replace them. Our midfield appears to be in some strife.

Also, I know he is young, but I did not like what I saw from Hugo tonight. Absolutely butchered it. I hope that is his nadir and he improves from here because we need to see our young players coming through.

Probably a harsh assessment but geez you've got to kick better than that young fella.

I can't believe we didn't at least try Balta in the ruck when it was going to *smile*. Good things happen when he goes in there. Soldo was useless

But what would we have done with Soldo if not in the ruck? Didn't really impact up forward except for a tap on to Shai.

Ross is the one who we could have tried as a midfielder. Baker to the wing.

Just had to halt the momentum & in a desperate situation where nothing conventional was working, unconventional is all that’s left.

He didn’t even try Ross in the centre bounce. I certainly agree our midfield is in a mess & don’t hold long term hope on RCD, Dow etc.

Looks rough around the edges with ball in hand. Maybe not so bad handballing, but by foot, questionable.

End of the day our midfield was smashed. They only got 1 goal from their key forwards. Our defence is not the issue. Our forward line is not an issue. But boy we have some issues in the guts.

Our midfield needs rejuvenating. No point keeping the likes of Dow or RCD in the twos. Play them. See what they have got.
Yep, flogged again where the game starts. We read brilliantly with Cotch, Shedda, Dusty, JG, Shai, Nank etc, yet loose centre clearances abysmally. Why?
Our turnover game plan from the back half that netted 3 magnificent flags is yesterday.
That was evident from last year. No improvement in Rd 1 2022.
In trying to eke out another flag, don’t know if our champion vets are up to it, or our game plan just has not evolved.

Thinking back. WTF were we doing with Baker in the midfield when Prestia went down? I love Bakes and think he could do ok I'm that role. But he hasn't been in there all pre season. One of our blokes goes down and we revert to something we haven't tried all pre Season? Where was the contingency planning?

Maybe, but they were not the reason we lost - it was our poor performing midfield in that last quarter. (In fact the whole game)
Probably, but 2 of the first three goals in the last quarter were directly from Ross turnovers when he wasn’t even under much pressure. Those turned the tide.

I'm hoping that there was some complacency in the group and they thought that with a full pre season that we'd be right; and that the smacking tonight will maybe shake that complacency out of them. That practice game against a poor and weakened Hawks side was rubbish; we played one decent quarter and after that it was a very ordinary effort. Not a great tune up for a round clash.

The response against GWS in 10 days will be very interesting to behold. 10 days is a long time for a proud group to dwell on a very poor performance.

We got slaughtered in 2nd and 4th.

Is round 1, but what is 'the brand' for 22? Halfway in the last when technically still in the fight and we had Soldo, Jack and Lynch alone roaming the front 65.

Press and forward pressure? Not skilled enough to play slow and possess.

Do not know who it was, do not remember.
But the person who contradicted my post last week and said Kennedy was a "spud", mate, you know nothing about footy.
Zero knowledge bud.
They dominated centre clearances, taps to advantage, in the final quarter, and we could not counter it.

I really worry about the coming 3-4 years
I understand that every team goes through a rebuild , finish bottom 4-6 get some juicy picks etc..

I fear we could be in for a tougher time , winning a spoon or three..
The rapid decline of our older players combined with the poor development and/or quality of younger players has me very concerned...

20 points up 6 min mark 1st qtr
Lose by 25 points in the 25 mins
Staggering
We made Voss look like a super coach.
Pity the 2 doofus before had the same team

Geez can you imagine what the GoDeez would've done to us tonight.

Pretty much what they did to us last year maybe worse this time around.

I take the 3 flags and have a 10 yr lay off
What's Stkilda's excuse?

agree on Aarts, but more so Ross IMO, offers nothing. Looks OK I suppose when he gets the ball in space, runs, not fast, and maybe takes a bounce and kicks to a teamate. Thats it. Its not much to hang your hat on.

Ross is a concern but not more so than Aarts.

If we have no-one in the 2's that has more a future that can get 14 disposals then we are in for a heap of trouble over the next few years. The other thing with Aarts more than anyone else in the team, he gets caught HTB so often because of 2 things, no spatial awareness hence he gets run down a lot, just waits way too long to dispose and 2, he dives on the ball constantly when going to win it. He needs to stay on his feet much more than he does.

He's the 1st one out of the team IMO.
