Rich V Carl - Match Day Thread

Footy is losing me. How can these players, who granted are on good money, be expected to just stand and shut up after a dodgy free is paid against them in the heat of battle. Meanwhile the media want unprecedented access to everyone and everything and expect honesty. Get *smile*!
The AFL want the best of both worlds. Mark my words kids will lose interest in this sport, if they’re are expected to have fun whilst being disciplined like navy seals. Somethings got to give.

Come off it, Gibbo was solid. You're down on the old blokes and down on debutants, can't have it both ways.
Yeah but was he really needed in tonights team? Wasnt Miller warranted a crack at it first? If its good enough for Gibcus then we should have debut one of the midfield boys which was a bigger necessity

Gotta agree with this. Yeah Tiges look like they may start sucking again but aside from that, they have filtered this game to the point of making it unrecognisable. Slowly turning off it tbh

The stand rule is a travesty, a joke, an abomination, a too clever-by-half solution to problem that never existed, its what happens when idiots jump at shadows, and in addition, it is against the spirit of the game.

No value in him retirement now, see the season out and put everything into developing Sonsie and RCD
There's NO ROOM in THIS game for sentimentality I hate to say ........... its NOT the NBA where every road game the opposition hand you a gift for your contribution over the years................ if you cant produce, its over, just the way it is.

Do you wanna rebuild or dontcha? We debut an 18 yo first year KPP, he acquits himself well, and you're having a whinge?

Things have certainly gone down hill since Dimma;s affair.
Does it have anything to do with it or is it purely coincidental? Lots of assistants jumping ship around the same time as well. Would like to think it just all happened around the same time

Spot on . Centre clearances looked woeful at the ground tonight. First use to McGoos seemed obvious.
Lack of discipline/ rules knowledge another standout.
Made me puke the number of goals scored from the above.
Fix it Dimma or be irrelevant again in 2022.
My biggest worry is our Assistant coaches. IMO, of my 3 main concerns, this one and the conditioning dept are my main concerns.

Its not the older players' fault that they are getting old. That happens. It is what it is that they are no longer in the top few mid groups in the game.
But we never seem to learn to get smarter with the dumb free kicks, etc.

I havent rated our MC and assistants since round 3 last year - so many errors made last year that we all posted about from the Samson Ryan selection to the gameplan to discipline. For me its not arrogance, i seriously believe we now have a below par MC, assistant coaching panel and the whole Tim Livingstone/coaching structure. It's not functioning and it wasnt LY either. We still arent a top 4 team anymore; but the leadership/coaching/MC is adding to below par performance.

Agree. I thought he was on the down and off the pace last year. Brilliant career but the problem when you slow down is you have to rush your disposals and that clearly showed tonight. It's kick and hope for him now. 5 efficient disposals playing in the midfield just doesn't cut it, particularly when your opponent gets 20+.

We're not going to drop such a historically great player so that's less chance for the youngsters to get a go.

Going to be another tough year.
Hope your wrong mate ... he deserves better than that, hoping maybe Balmy might have a word in his ear, club greats shouldn't limp out the door.

We have to remember its round one! Yes, disappointing to lose to Carlton but they are much improved and we have to understand that you cant lose 17-2 out of the middle in the last quarter and expect to win. The game has changed, you can no longer afford to get beaten badly out of the middle. A few thoughts ...
1. Overall I think we are too big - effects our run. Don't think we can go with Soldo and Nank - prefer Nank and Balta with giving Nank a rest every few weeks. Perhaps we could try Soldo as 1st ruck with Nank forward while Jack is out.
2. Graham was undisciplined and not ready - too many bad frees and 50's against.
3. We continue to be ill-disciplined around the mark and it costs us 50's - 9 - 0 I think. If you want a sure thing to bet on; bet on the Tigers conceding more 50's than the opposition!
4. Prestia is a huge loss (probably cost us the match as that is where we were thrashed). Problem is we really have no replacement for him. I think for the time being Dusty has to stay in the middle more.
5. We shouldn't over react - The Dees, Dogs and Blues have probably the best midfields in terms of size and depth - its probably only them that we have to be weary of!

End of the day our midfield was smashed. They only got 1 goal from their key forwards. Our defence is not the issue. Our forward line is not an issue. But boy we have some issues in the guts.

Our midfield needs rejuvenating. No point keeping the likes of Dow or RCD in the twos. Play them. See what they have got.

I'm staggered we only lost the centre clearance 14-12. It felt far worse. As for the tackle count inside 50...

I think we were 12-5 up at some stage (or similar).

Clearances from boundary throw-ins were an abomination.

I think overall we are too slow. Tarrant makes it worse in the back half. Balta may end up playing every position on the ground before the year is out, or even before Round 3.

You cant pick and choose with the rebuild. If thats the case Cotch and Jack should have hung up the boots. Look, dont get me wrong he didnt have a bad game. My point is why the rush to bring him in when we had plenty of cover in that position. Had Grimes not pulled up i could understand it although i still believe Miller deserved a crack first. I just feel i would have preferred the debut of a Sonsie or Brown. This was just arrogance. Almost like weve recruited a decent KP so we will debut him as its only Carlton.

The most concerning aspect of tonight was the "MCG Match Day Experience" and service.

Arrived at the ground around 6:20, lined up at a bar in the AFL members reserve and got 2 beers to take back to the seats - maybe 7 or 8 minutes.

The next shout, was around 7:05, the beers came back just before the bounce - 20 minutes.

I went at 1/4 time - no chance I was getting beers and being able to watch any of the 2nd quarter. The queues were way too long.

I tried again at the start of half time - same situation. If I queued, would have missed the bulk of the 3rd quarter.

I tried again late in the 3rd, around the 25 minute mark, the bar was closing to any new entrants.

I can't recall any time previously where service was so non-existent.
