Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

The highlights of those two goals on the RFC show him booting the footy a fair way. I didn't realise he had it in him to kick it that far. No doubt it comes from a higher fitness and strength base.

Definitely seems more penetration in his long kicking. With greater strength he seems to have improved on that chippier action he had last season.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

The thing I havent noticed about Conca this year is his willingness to use his left boot.

His highlights when drafted showed he was genuinely dual sided but last year he refused to use his left even when it was often his best or only option.

This year and particularly on the w'end, Conca used his left boot with class without a second thought, including his second goal in the third. Possibly more a confidence thing but a change in his game from last year which can only be of benefit to the team.

We should Thank Brian Leys for guiding Conca our way ;)

Leys was positively gushing in his praise of Conca, Brian's routine spruiking of him to Gale and Weightman probably played a big part in his eventual selction.

Must admit I didn't expect that carry. Ultra impressed with this kid and our drafting policy.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

As others have said, I was really shocked he was able to roost it 55 metres.

My observation of him last season was a real classy player with good skills, makes great decisions with his disposal but my biggest concern was that he wasn't a penetrating kick. I'm glad I underestimated him in this area of his game, as I don't see many real weaknesses, just lots and lots of upside.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I actually posted last year that I thought he would be a good player for us but that he would be an under the radar player who would do a job every week. I saw nothing special about him. I felt that he would do a job but was worried about his pace, the penetration in his kicking and the fact that he seemed very right sided.
I am pretty sure now I was wrong on all 3 counts. The one that has really surprised me is that he is quicker than I thought, especially over the first 10 metres.

Dont underestimate the skill required for that goal.

Only a small % of AFL players could have kicked that goal on their non-preferred as easily as that.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

The thing I liked about his two goals towards the end of the third quarter was his first long bomb he kicked using his right boot, the second with his left.

All class the kid in just his second year. ;D

Agree mate the goal on his wrong foot was superb. Very rare these days a player with a genuine opposite foot

Looks like we have ourselves a pretty handy footballer here :clap
Agree. Really exciting to see the improvement in skills, composure, class and 1%ers so far this year.

Seems to have gone from a reasonable young player in 2011 to a quality midfielder in 2012!

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

His game showed what it was that FJ saw 3 years ago. Clean skills, good attack at contest, reads the play well. Now he has a taste for the goals, hopefully he can be another option each week.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

It ws obvious at the start of the year that Frank had got it wrong. Conca ahead of Heppell? Hilarious.

Conca is useless overhead. A bit like Knighta. And yes he is a Knighta clone in his stride.

Conca improves in many ways but mostly he is getting some real *smile* in him.

Conca = Knights clone

Heppell = Jason Cloke clone

Spot on. Same with the Cotch is the next Ablett claim. I'd much prefer to concentrate on what they are actually doing rather than what they might/or might not be like one day. I'm glad they are both Tigers.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

he is surprisingly hard at a contest for such a young player and wins alot of 50 50 contests in tight already. he's more an in and under type imo. need more outside runners.
