Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Have thought this for a while & far be it for leysy to compare to one of his few all time faves.

But how *smile*ing much is Reece Conca like Matthew Knights.

A high honour but is getting close to deserving it. Baggy shorts'n'all.

Know its a big call, but anyone?

Big call mate but the signs are promising. With Cotchin being compared to Mr Magic we only need a tough as nails midfielder to measure up to The Flea and we have one of our best midfield ever. Maybe Martin if he develops a better work ethic

I reckon its a fair call, Conca backs his ability & the more he plays at the top level the better he'll be.
Its that backing of his ability that creates the extra time & space he looks to have at times, basically he doesn't panic when he gets the pill.
FJ picked a good one with this pick.

The other one is Caddy. Just saw him put it out of bounds for the second time under no pressure, and not racking up the stats either.

Yeah only racked up 16 possessions in his 5th game of AFL footy. Dud, Brisbane should delist.

Heppel reminds me of Travis Johnstone.
Nasty *smile* slap off the blind side there TF.
Won't complain if you're right, just because it would be sweet to hear the Bummer fans slaughter another one of their own for failing to meet expectations.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Heppell was poor last night and it looked like the GC were really targeting himm physically too whick may have put him off his game.

If Ellis is a step above Conca we'll be very happy. Conca is a point guard, in the Matty Knights mould. Get the ball through his hands as much as possible and the side will benefit.

Na buddy, just you. ;)

Other than baggy shorts, in what way are they similar?

Haven't you read the thread? There has been some similarities already pointed out by myself and davidrodan.

Knights was the master of creating time and space, whether it be an arch of the back, a neat sidestep, a baulk or a dummy. He also had the ability to keep his feet despite fierce tackling pressure, rarely did one see Knights pinged for holding the ball. Conca exihibited these traits early last year and based on yesterday's performance, he appears to have raised his game to another level.

One area Conca struggled with last year was on the scoreboard, yesterday he became a goalkicking rover, something which Knights was renowned for, particularly in the 1995 semi-final. Their kicking styles seem to be cut from the same cloth, not overly penetrative but with an ability to gain extra mileage when kicking on the run. My biggest criticism of Conca last year was his inability to convert, he almost appeared overawed when lining up for goal. So far this year, the signs have been good, the monkey seems to have been shaken and there appears to be a little more confidence about him when taking shots on goal.

Other similarities with Knights include the physique, a seemingly low centre of gravity with strong hips and legs. Conca appears to be particularly agile and importantly, seems to be a quick thinker on the field.

Is he there yet? Of course not, but the signs are promising and he's shown as much, if not more than any of the other mids in his draft class. He may not be as flashy as some but he ticks just about every box available when assessing a footballers potential and overall worth. I would be very surprised if Conca's career stalled from this point on, if I was a betting man, I'd say we've got a 200 game, ten year footballer on our hands (and a very good one).

It is a pretty tasty scenario if your 3rd or 4th best midfielder (in say, 2013) is compared with Knighter! He was terrific yesterday, moves really well through traffic and loves cutting back through the corridor.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Skills and tactics would be similar but Knighter was a bit squibbish in the early games (early 90s) whereas Conca's a hard nut already.

True TF, Conca is certainly harder at it than Knighta at the same stage. Knights skills were probably sharper though.

Conca is gong to be a pearler!
