Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Agree about Conca. Ellis looks like he may be a step above him. Really promising.

Bit worried about Ellis' lack of pace.

Conca looks really promising, one of only few prepared to run and spread though I wish he would take the ball in his hands on not on his chest.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Luv the way he plays, composed, hard at it, makes the play and has very good skills.....
I can see Reece being a top liner within 2 years, has all the attributes....

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If we end up with half a dozen Conca/Ellis types in the next 2-3 drafts we will be in a good spot. May not be stars, but won't make mistakes and constant bad decisions. How many of these we have as opposed to error riddled duds will determine our future.

good post and and thats the crust right there mate, its not about having every player as a star its about players who will make the right decisions and not turn it over....

Don’t worry about Ellis pace. He still looks like he is carrying some puppy fat so as he slims off he will get quicker. Judge him by what he does in tight and what he does with the ball in his hands.

And agree on Conca, takes a lot of chest marks. But knows when to spread and always puts himself in space. Gets it and goes.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Think Conca and Ellis are meeting criteria we may not have addressed in the past (reliable).
Feels like we are following more of a Sydney model than a Hawthorn model (based on discussion re Clarksons influence on Dimma).

Didn't Ellis finish 2nd to Houli in the Tan trial? Not sure you'd be carrying too much puppy fat and still run like that. If he is a little overweight will be a scary good endurance athlete in a few years.

Doubt he's going to get too much faster, is OK if he can become a mid but will hurt him as a defensive small. Is clearly a smart footballer so may be able to overcome the lack of pace.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Geez! Lot of people giving young Ellis a slap in just his second game.
Doesn't need to be lightning fast with some decent runners like Newy, Houli and Tross coming out of the backline. What he needs most is the ability to read the play, get into the right places to compete and to use the ball with composure.
Haven't seen him do anything wrong to show he won't be a good player for us. Kids done well to get straight into the seniors and survive a baptism of fire against two of the better sides in the comp.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Conca has great endeavour, still makes some mistakes but you live with that to get a genuine future mid. Think Conca is what we quietly wished for for Jackson but never got. Reece moved well last night for a second year player.

Judge Ellis after two seasons, not two games - another pre-season will make a world of differenece, as it has for Reece!

Haven't seen anyone slap him at all. Skip and myself have said we are bit worried about his lack of pace and that is all. Others have subsequently advised not to worry about it.

It’s a valid call. Pace is not his strong suit.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If I had one knock on him it would maybe be a lack of penetration in his kicking....very well rounded footballer IMHO ...I won't be putting a ceiling on his limitation

Agree.

If he was quicker he would have went in the draft before our pick.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

So glad to see Conca finally kick that goal. Monkey off the back and hopefully good contributions going forward. Ellis = v slow !

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Ellis not the quickest but sometimes you can look slower when you are still trying to get used to the pace of the game at AFL level. Personally I am glad we are picking footballers first, athleticism second. There are options with footballers, often very few options with athletes who can't progress their football skills.

Agreed to a point Goodytwoshoes however we do lack a quick outside player.hopefully one will be on our shopping list next draft.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Oh yes.

We really need speedsters like Mitchell, Swallow, Boyd, Watson, Hodge and Rockliff - all club champions.

The power Leysey exerts is astounding. One comment and the lemmings line up to follow him off the cliff.

If Ellis is a step above Conca we'll be very happy. Conca is a point guard, in the Matty Knights mould. Get the ball through his hands as much as possible and the side will benefit.
