goody please heppell was in the worst 5 on the ground along with hille, jetta, davey and forgot the other..
18 possies u say turovers a plenty and little wayne cambpell dinky kicks which didnt even hit their target from 15 meters away, his 18 possies felt more like 5 or 6, he was bad really bad....but on the same token he's had a terrific year but in a final cheap kicks arent on offer...

Not just errant kicks but handballs which fell short or put team mates under enormous pressure. Heppell is a very good player but certainly not the stand alone superstar which the media has made out. I even noticed a couple of weeks ago guys like McAvaney salivating despite some very poor decision making on Heppell's part. 'Heppell can do anything'........yes he can Bruce, mistakes and turnovers included.

He may turn out to be a champion. Too early to tell yet. Let's see what happens in 2012. Like all young players, he needs a big, injury free pre-season.

He also was found out a bit in contested marking, but he's young and he's had a great season. Good luck to the kid

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I am trying to work out why there is so much information about this Dyson Heppell kid in a thread titled Reece "Squirrel" Conca :headscratch ;D

more scared doesnt like the hard stuff gee i mentioned this a month or 2 ago especially V the pies, shirks the contests...

Many were doubting conca over heppell, for what we needed we needed skill and good decision making and conca ticks all boxes plus goes in damn hard, give him another preseason or 2 and will be in our top bracket of mids....

The thread on bigfooty has been closed after 5 pages i commented on page 2 but heres the link;

...and i will say its not about whether heppell can play he CAN as we all know heppells had a great run this year playing the spare utility me thinks next year opposing teams will focus more to negate him and put defensive fwds on him simply to curtail any run and getting the easy ball....

Yep agree. I'd also be taking Shuey in a heartbeat over Heppell.

I thought he looked tired.

It's been a long season so not surprising, I also agree with the original comment that he looks 'lazy' although I would rephrase that to 'laconic'. A lot of similarities to Joel Bowden, I just hope he doesn't cop the same vitriol that we dished out to our dual All-Australian and B&F winner (although I have my doubts when it comes to some Bomber supporters).

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Heppell doesn't do much at training and the club have allowed him days off during the week to rest up, considering he also had the bye last week I doubt he was tired.

The kid will be a very good footballer but IMO I just think we have the better 'pure' footballer if that makes any sense.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

feel sorry for conca...all this negativity really is wasted energy...
will be a fine player in my book...i think some are always looking for a RFC
player to fail...if we ever want to move forward some need to support the player and team..

I'd like him to succeed but I was just trying to point out that we didn't take the best player available. I really like Conca's aggression at the ball. I like his temperament in that he doesn't seem to get flustered. I love his tackling too but I feel he needs a good preseason to improve some of his shortcomings. I hope he will develop into a useful player (I'd love him to develop into a great player). I thought he played well at the start of the season but fell away badly towards the end. I am not trying to create a tambling v buddy situation, so I will not mention that bummers player again. Go Conca - much better name too.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I think we can safely say we didn't pick the best first year player. We'll see in 5 years time if we picked the best player available to us or not.

I think the WCE may have down very well with their second pick and in a few years time most clubs will be comparing their first picks to the Eagles 2nd.

He panics and just releases the ball to anyone.

this is exactly what he doesn't do. his main strength is his composure and decision making. almost always finds a teamate.

Matthew Knights-like composure was what I saw from Conca at the beginning of the season, he struggled a little when he played as a backman but blossomed in the midfield.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Was really thrown in the deep end at the start of the season against 4 top sides in the backline, whereas I thought Grigg started really well in the midfield. When they moved Reece into the midfield Grigg played more down back and struggled a bit.

Reece got caught with the ball a few times, but he will get better once he adapts better to the speed of the game and his decision making is faster. He does have good awareness and is prepared to push into the backline to provide an option as well. Some of his kicking was very good, especially at times his delivery to Jack in the forward line.

Has a pretty good size to him already that will improve as he gets older and a few preseasons into him. I think it would have been pretty obvious to most people if he had struggled early on they would have been questioning the decision to draft him at No.6, but I think by midyear most were happy to have got him then - let's just hope he has the sort of 2nd year that Martin has had and keeps on improving.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I think Reece will be a good player, but maybe just a good player. Nothing special. He will be able to do whatever is asked of him and makes sure he plays to the game plan, and do his job well.

The club might have seen Heppell as a risk with his supposed OP.I think we have just gone with the safe option, no injury history, good attitude, good in most aspects of the game. Just a well rounded player.

I'm relatively happy with that.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Conca looks like he'll be a player so no issue there, but the posts questioning Heppell are quite laughable ILO.

Dont think it was possible for him to show more than he has this year, nor what he projects to do in the future.

Similar to the no risk, don't take Franklin, get Tambling?

(sorry, old ground, but....)

There would only ever be 2 players available at pick 4 on 2004, Roughhead or Tambling. It's well documented we weren't even close to taking Franklin, ever, at any point. Franklin was actually taken early because Clarkson wanted tall forwards, otherwise no doubt Tambling would have been taken at pick 2.

I'm telling you right now, any other club, other than Hawthorn, would have done the same as us at the time.

I get so annoyed when people think we almost took Franklin.

Will be a player for sure Leysy but there were some recurring signs today that the transition to midfield won't be as seamless as some predict.

I reckon his lateral movement is exceptional. Really composed with the footy too. Excellent control of the short short kick, fine handball. Gutsy.
Let's see what he's doing with a full pre season season in the gym and and uninterrupted period on the track.
High ceiling of improvement IMO.
