It would appear that I may be the only one who doesn't see blue sky with Conca. His kicking has been ordinary. He ducks into tackles trying to win a cheap free. He panics and just releases the ball to anyone. He isn't quick and gets caught too often. Wish we had've picked Heppell who just oozes class.

Joel Selwood thread. His kicking isn't ordinary. He's not a long kick but he's an accurate kick. He isn't slow at all? Yes, Heppell is better at this stage. Who knows next year or the year after. This won't be a tambling/buddy situation even if heppell is better.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Can't knock Conca's disposal. Actually had a 17 possession game with 100% disposal efficiency. 9 of his 17 games he's had greater than 80% efficiency. Do have to take into account that statistically backmen do get higher disposal efficiencies but nevertheless a great effort on that front.

We have to give him a bit of leeway being his first year. Haven't been unhappy with Conca just think Heppell has been an absolute standout.

I also like his work. He has time with the ball in his hands and goes in really hard. I think we should play him forward a bit next year so he can learn how to kick a few goals.

Would rather see him given time in the front half next year than the back half with stints in the middle and wing.

Don't necesarily agree tmouse but you do make some valid observations - especially re his kicking which lacks penetration and can be a bit Griggesque.

A very safe player when it comes to disposal, my only real knock on Conca is goal kicking and I'm sure the coaching staff will be aware of it too.

Got the yips massively didnt he? Early on was always looking to pass off and do team thing. Needs to be more selfish and kick them himself.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

The question i ask is did we pick the best available player with our 1st pick?
Not being bias i wouldve picked 3 players before him, Caddy, Heppell or Darling.

Any of those guys would have been good selections, in the end we had scouts watching Conca for an entire season so from a process perspective it's hard to be critical. In the end, I suspect Conca got the nod for his psych testing and leadership attributes which were outstanding. If I was to second guess the thought process it would have gone something like Darling (too undisciplined), Heppell (injury concerns and not necessarily a true midfielder), Caddy (a lesser version of Martin when variety would be more beneficial). It may all turn out to be a case of looking several gift-horses in the mouth but I suspect all will go on to be fine players.

Heppell's dudding it up so far in this final.

So did Shuey. Nerves getting better of them.

Its why when one poster on BF thinks finals is unacceptable and its all about premierships u have to laugh. Need the experience first.

I've mentioned it before but Heppell loses a bit of composure in tight pack situations, this is where Conca has the edge in my opinion.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Couldn't care less regarding the comparisons with Heppell. In Conca we have a fine young player who will mature into a good midfielder similar to Foley IMO. Skills are good and doesn't seem to panic under pressure. Just needs another 20 games in 2012 to establish himself.

Agree.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If you stuck Heppell in the Richmond backline, I doubt he would have won the Rising Star award this year.

To say we got this pick is being a bit hard on Conca, In my opinion, Heppell had it easy playing in a Don's team that has performed very well all season.

Wouldn't mind seeing Heppells stats today, he's struggled under the pressure.

Not sure which stats book you're reading from. Essendon won 11 games lost 10 and ended 100%. Hardly a team easy to play in because they've performed well all season. Also 6th for most scored against. Backline was not their strong point at all. Heppell would have slotted in very well in the Tigers backline and I don't think it would have made an difference in his ability to win the Rising Star award.

Heppell 18 possessions not a bad effort for his first final. A staggering 8 Essondon players couldnt manage more than 10 possessions.

Every club has good kids, its the ones that go on to become champions that let clubs win premierships

Heppell seems to have that 'lazy' look at times.

more scared doesnt like the hard stuff gee i mentioned this a month or 2 ago especially V the pies, shirks the contests...

Many were doubting conca over heppell, for what we needed we needed skill and good decision making and conca ticks all boxes plus goes in damn hard, give him another preseason or 2 and will be in our top bracket of mids....

The thread on bigfooty has been closed after 5 pages i commented on page 2 but heres the link;

...and i will say its not about whether heppell can play he CAN as we all know heppells had a great run this year playing the spare utility me thinks next year opposing teams will focus more to negate him and put defensive fwds on him simply to curtail any run and getting the easy ball....

goody please heppell was in the worst 5 on the ground along with hille, jetta, davey and forgot the other..
18 possies u say turovers a plenty and little wayne cambpell dinky kicks which didnt even hit their target from 15 meters away, his 18 possies felt more like 5 or 6, he was bad really bad....but on the same token he's had a terrific year but in a final cheap kicks arent on offer...
