Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Did Pendlebury start off on a back flank?

Relevance?

Heppell will play as a permanent midfielder soon enough and has all the similar attributes to Pendlebury. Tall, Silky skills and mover, elite decision making and always thinking one step ahead (thus giving the impression they have all the time in the world), good in traffic and congestion, elite handball to advantage, etc.

He's already played there in burts this year and done well and he played as a midfielder a lot as a junior and dominated.

Was just wondering. Looking at their stats they're very similar early on, hence the question.

Wouldnt suprise leysy if that was the case.

Pendlebury was playing a lot off a wing even as recent as the early part of last year.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

While we all want to talk up our own players, those that don't believe Heppel is a class above Conca need to take the rose coloured glasses. Would love Conca to prove me very wrong but not holding my breath. Happy with him, but considering our list we need to get as many superstar A Graders we can. On Heppel we yet again missed out.

Superstar A Grader=David Swallow.
Heppell is a way off from Swallows standard.
Conca even further.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

perhaps people should learn draftees should not be judged for at least 3/4 years, unless they are an absolute standout one way or the other.
way too many examples of players being overhyped early then becoming average players, or players being judged harshly then having good/great careers.

yep, Swallow by a street IMO

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

How many people would have had Rich over Hill and Yarran after their first year? Conca has shown plenty to be confident about. Heppell might indeed become the better player, but I don't think it will be the difference between a LB and a CJ.

Not many superstar A graders floating around Cpt. Agree Swallow is a gun. Heppell is an A grader who we would love to have. Conca has had moments but the gap between him and Heppell is significant at this stage.

A timey reminder there Brodders, I recall the same hyper ventilating when Riewoldt wasn't starring and Vickery wasn't dominating at 19. Given their midfelders, I'll say we could pass judgement in 3 years but I will say that Conca's early form was on par with Heppell. Over the season, Heppell has been more consistent but he has also had some very average games, particularly when Essendon were on a losing streak. As for Heppell's long term prospects in the midfield, I'll reserve judgement, he still strikes me as the perfect rebounding defender in the Goddard, Deledio, Gibbs mould - that's not to say he won't be used in the midfield but probably won't spend the majority of his time there. For those of you who are lamenting the decision to recruit Conca, grab a tape of the first Richmond v Essendon and then tell me who came across as the more accomplished midfielder, I think for many it may come as a very big surprise.

I agree.
Conca is a good 'un and let's hope he develops into an A grader.

Reece missed the draft camp through injury, we drafted him injured and he didnt really join in training till mid-December, fair to say he's had a long year.
He looks really tired to me .
I don't really want to compare Reece to anyone now because he is a Richmond player , I just want him to become the best player he can be .
I think he will become a very good player but the one who has really surprised me is Jake Batchelor . Looks like a very likely type . I have no idea why he was almost neglected in the run up to the draft because he has looked like an AFL player from the moment he stepped on the field .

True Big Meow on all counts.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Just remember tha Heppel had a full preseason and Conca didnt. Lets judge at the end of 2013.

Agree. Conca does look like the lack of pre season has caught up with him. That said I do think we will all be happy that we got Conca in years to come.

However, remember Rhys Palmer was touted as the greatest young talent ever a few years back and injuries aside has done sweet FA since.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Still reckon we might end up regretting not taking Heppell in years to come. And how good did Caddy look in his 2nd game for GC on the weekend? Hopefully Conca can get a good pre-season an consolidate on a promising first season.

Hmm. It burnt me up on the inside to see Heppell get the Rising Star. The one that got away.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

The way he plays, Conca will derive a lot of benefit from muscling up. Built like a soft kid at this point but slams in hard. I like the boy.
