Re: Reece "2018 Whipping Boy" Conca
Reece is distinguishing himself as part of the Richmond maul. Conca doesn’t get sent to the outer ring of the clearance, he operates at the coal face. He is big, strong and fearless. His ability to win the ball back has him blending in with his more decorated premiership teammates. A lazy 6 intercepts on the weekend. That’s a *smile* load for a mid. He can also extract in close and come out of traffic at the other end in space to receive. We don’t necessarily want him to do that, we are a premiership side with better outside users than him. But his ability to move in waves has always been a recommendation for his class. Reece is a quick player after all, he can’t help but find space. Quick over the lawn and quick by hand. He’s on track to become a premiership player. And there could be significant improvement to come if he can stay fit for the first time in his career.
Conca’s overriding weakness has been his body and he’s had a litany of problems with it. Even when a player with fitness issues comes to hand, they still need time to develop touch and form. Dimma thinks that Reece should be doing that in the 1s and premiership players have found themselves out of the side while Conca has been in every week for a 7-1 start after eight rounds. That’s a fair recommendation from a coach who has a shortage of spots in a title defence.
