Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

Thought some of his defensive work was ok. Solid but not great. By hand he was serviceable but not spectacular. Kicking was horrible.

Not as bad as people make out, but prefer Short if he's fit.

I think we have to remember that Short is a gun kick, can accumulate ball back there but defensively was no where near it last year.
I would like to see Short play Ellis' role before Conca's role if we have a choice.

Let Conca do the dirty work and feed it out to Short/Oleg etc. and maybe Brandon Ellis.

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

Conca !! Twice today not under any undue pressure ,up to his old tricks , sprays it. Must be wearing high heel shoes. A Magoo for all 2017.

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

I'm not a hater, yet.

A few wind affected disposals (plenty of other blokes had a few of those today as well), and maybe two genuinely poor kicks.

But.

He got to plenty of contests. He helped other defenders out. He didn't shirk contact. He took a few hits to the ego when it was the better of two poor options. (That is, accepting a holding the ball situation, rather than handballing to the passing opposition player. Y'know, the opposite of what B. Ellis does). He pushed up the ground. He's actually not bad at finding a way to get involved in close and being part of the chain in clearing the ball from a congested backline.

I see Conca as the anti-Lennon. Works hard, knows where he needs to be and what to do, can get plenty of ball, quick enough for the role he plays, but not blessed with sublime skills.

I'd have him in the team over Hunt, on current form.

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

His kicking was shocking even by his standards. He wasn't as brutal as usual nor as prolific. But he was clean off the deck. He wins contested ball but he wins loose ball too - that's the good stuff.

He's what we've got for now. Particularly with no Houli.

People need to get over it - he is a lock for round 1.

Please say it's not true. I fear it's true though, who else can do the kick ins from opposition behinds?

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

Apparently his lack of a pre-season is the reason for his dodgy disposal.

Please.

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

When drafted our recruiters went on about how good his kicking skills were on both sides. Unfortunately we have just not seen them. Thought he was ok yesterday overall

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

I've generally been a critic of Reece's

But, apart from a couple of bad kicks, I thought he was pretty good.

Hopefully he can build on that performance

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

Juffa, Jack and Bidders have this right. Conca is a bit like Shed, sometimes he bites off more than he can chew and sometimes he shanks 'em, so his errors look real bad. But he wins contests (won the ball back more than any other Richmond defender last pre-season, until injured, and I daresay he'd be leading again this year). He's very good at working his way out of congestion, always looks to use the ball positively and brings others into the game. Apart from two howler kicks, he played well.

I love Juffa's idea of playing him back there to release Short. Imagine the damage Short could do if he got Brandon's 23 per game.

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

At this stage I'd be picking Conca ahead of Hunt and B.Ellis.

FWIW, I'd also be playing Short ahead of all 3.

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

Two strong games in a row for Reece. Hope the kid continues to play well as i think he can be a contributor.

Re: Reece "Pitching Wedge" Conca

66% disposal efficiency despite just 5 contested possessions. As a 7th year player at the Tigers he needs to better, much better. Otherwise give some youngsters a go.

Nailed it . Tigers to be successful have to have players like Conca playing in the the Magoos with the players replacing them producing what we want. That is " to be feared by all & sundry in the AFL sphere " .

Just not good enough.

Hardwick has set the bar pretty low for Conca it seems. Short won't get a look in all year unless Conca rips his hammy.

“Reece, down back, I thought was terrific,” Hardwick said.

“His ability to compete, find the ball, win possession-gains, then distribute, has been really pleasing.”
