Re: Pick 6: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

A very informative interview http://www.richmondfc.com.au/roar%20vision%20archive/tabid/11454/contentid/314631/default.aspx with FJ at the ND, describes Conca as a Hybrid Mid.

Around the 3:20 minute mark of this interview he mentions that Conca came under our radar in the Under 16's. Did I hear that correctly because it was a little unclear.

That's true and there are probably a few other examples. I actually am not critisising it , just saying we have done it two years in a row which may indicate a change in strategy , maybe a good change. I remember last year listening to the draft and being a little surprised when Astbury was called at 35 and wondering who Nason and Webberley were. Similar this year. We were only not surprised with the Conca because it had been talked about before the draft.

I guess the point is that this team is playing their own game and not being swayed by popular opinion and probably that is change brought about by being more informed and having more resources.

I think the change of strategy has been kicking skills, I think they have implemented their own kicking profiles to assess the kids
I guess that this is why there has been a few from 'left field'

IIRC with Astbury, Burgatron (who had very good inside goss) had us taking Astbury with our last pick so we all went with that
I was surprised when he was read out at 35 but looking back (good old hindsight) we all can see why, around 194cm, can play back and forward, smart footballer, came equal 2nd in the first kicking test (very good for a tall), leadership

Also I think it is good the recruiting team taking kids who they want and who fit with the team rather than taking players who slide but might not fit our structures
Obviously there are exceptions to this rule but on the whole players slide for a reason and only really slide in the eyes of those who are not recruiters if you get what i mean

Anyway there has been some 'left field' picks this year (left field compared to popular opinion) and we will all wait with anticipation to see how the 2010 batch go

Bring on 2011
Go Tiges

Thanks Disco.

No body can doubt that FJ doesn't do his homework.

For sure. Thank God we're finally taking junior recruitment seriously.

funny to think that the salary cap is probally the least affected and important issue when it comes too money in the AFL.... Hope that made sence ;D

I find the similarity borderline spooky, it's Dan Jackson head cut and paste onto Joel Bowden

Actually combine Dan's strength, endurance and endeavour with Joel's skills and you would have an excellent footballer a deadset superstar.
Has very nice balance does the Squirrel, like SuperJoel Bowden; makes good choices and hits his targets, like SuperJoel. I suspect we're going to be very happy with the Squirrel.

Re: Pick 6: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Squirrel Conca, in 8 mins of video highlights, shows more football ability in his big toenail than Daniel Jackson has in his entire body, in over 6 years of footy. And for that matter, Roundabouts Bowden as well.

Sean, Patrick, Rhett or Kane???? Surely to early to say about the 2 time B&F and All-Aust....

:hihi Is Jackson the new whipping boy? I know where you're coming from, Conca will be telling his family & friends the toughness Jackson shows in the scrimages and the way he sacrifices his body for the team.

Where possible with a player (i.e they havent come onto the scene late) all clubs track players back to under 16's or earlier.

yep.Hence why it was a sound decision not to use the Compo pick in this year or next years draft.

Re: Pick 6: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Yeah navy's on the fence with the compo pick.

Could see reason in the arguments for & against using it. At a push would probably have kept it.

Interesting that FJ said Darling or Lycett are the two we had in the gun for 30, so would obviously also have been who we would have chose between for that compo pick.

Time will tell how it pans out. Lycett has a lot of ability.

Re: Pick 6: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Happy we shelved the compo pick if we would have used it on Lycett. A lot of ability yes, but rucks are for rookieing. Pick 20-odd in 2012 will be a jet. Tapscott, Fyfe, Bastinac went 19, 20, 21 last year. A Fyfe in 2012 thanks.

Re: Pick 6: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If we had the compo pick and overlooked Darling I would have been super unimpressed.

Still think he is going to be a very, very good footballer.

have to agree. If we used the comp pick and got Darling, I would have been very happy.

Re: Pick 6: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If we'd used the compo pick, Darling would have gone the pick before.
