You wouldn't be thinking of Joel now would you?

I find the similarity borderline spooky, it's Dan Jackson head cut and paste onto Joel Bowden

Actually combine Dan's strength, endurance and endeavour with Joel's skills and you would have an excellent footballer.

Not clear on what you mean mate?

What I heard from an interview was Frank knew he was a top ten talent when he saw him in Round One. In other words was blown away by his talent.

Since then he has watched all his games, just like he would have done with all his highly rated guys, and put through the kid a series of tests just like he would have with every other highly rated kid. From those findings Conca came out on top in most of them.

It wasn't like he saw Conca in Round One and exclusively watched only him and only put him through the testing because he liked what he saw all the way back then and pencilled him in for our first pick. I think Frank and our recruits deserve a bit more respect than that.

Dunno, it just seems we would have taken him no matter what pick we had in the top 10, and regardless of what form any of the other players showed throughout the year.

Again not saying the pick is wrong. I know they are only highlights but he seems very very impressive and it actually seems odd in hindsight that none of the other supposed recruiting gurus in the media or on here ever mentioned him earlier as a possible top 10.

You have to remember JB that FJ would have watched every game for a lot of blokes, but you only hear the story about the guys we actually draft. As far as we know FJ has been sleeping outside Andrew Gaff's house for the last 6 months and loves him more than his own children, but he'll never admit it now

The first part of your first paragraph is probably right save from Swallow and Day. I reckon we rated Conca third overall. In front of Gaff and Polec and Bennell.

The second part of that first paragraph just isn't fair and doesn't give Frank and his team, and our club enough credit to be honest. They would of analysed over 150 names throughout the year. Just looking at Francis he is very tired and does a huge amount of work. He would have watched all of the games of a heap of kids and run the testing through them all.

The last part of what you wrote is spot on. I know your not having a go mate, and yep, very weird he wasn't considered a top ten pick. I had him at number 13 and was told that was way too high. That rating was off the Championship games, a few highlights, one game of colts he was involved in and talk about his psych ability. I would have loved to have seen a heap more tapes of his Colts and Senior games in WA.

The more I see and hear, the more I think we made a spot on choice.

“So, he’s the complete package . . . an outstanding kid

We even had to hide our interest from former Richmond player, Brian Leys, who is the CEO of Perth, because we were so keen on him and didn’t want other clubs finding out.”

The last part is what interests me the most, The club clearly had there sights set on this guy for a long long time, FJ must seriously rate this kid if they went trough the trouble of trying to hide him from other clubs.

Personally I think this is a great pickup the club did there own homework on potential draftees and put in a lot of time and effort to each and every single one of the picks used
Not just other clubs either. No wonder some people were upset 8)

When I watched his video highlights before the draft the first person he reminded me of was another ex-Perth, ex-Richmond premiership player and All-Australian. It's in the way he gets boot to ball and kicking accuracy. Hope Conca turns out as good as Robert Wiley.

Re: Pick 6: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

What FJ actually said was that "we" have watched him play every game this year . I assume RFC has recruiting staff watching WA games. I am sure FJ watched Conca but he would not personally have watched every game .
It seems to me that for some reason Richmond is the one club coming up with these left field picks , two years in a row we have picked players that seem to have surprised the main stream draft followers . Has something changed about the way we are assessing juniors ? Its interesting that in both years we picked players that it has later emerged Collingwood were interested in , which i see as a positive given all their resources . Last year Dea and Taylor and this year evidently Batchelor and Macdonald .
It's not a criticism of them , just an observation .

The picks become far less 'left field' than they first appear if Collingwood are in sync. They have the resources and track record and if FJ is on the same wavelength we will continue to do well.

It does seem a little odd we would pick a player a year/season out and mark him as a top 10 and watch him almost exlcusively for that pick.

.
Do you prefer we go back to Drafting kids from a video JB? ;D

The Bulldogs took Christian Howard in the first round last year even though he wasn't on (m)any BF phantom drafts.

That's true and there are probably a few other examples. I actually am not critisising it , just saying we have done it two years in a row which may indicate a change in strategy , maybe a good change. I remember last year listening to the draft and being a little surprised when Astbury was called at 35 and wondering who Nason and Webberley were. Similar this year. We were only not surprised with the Conca because it had been talked about before the draft.

I guess the point is that this team is playing their own game and not being swayed by popular opinion and probably that is change brought about by being more informed and having more resources.

Helbig could well be the 2011 version of Ben Nason. I just have an inkling he may see games next year.

My thinking too, but I even think he may show more than Nason... Don't know exactly what it is about this kid, but there is something that really impresses me about him!
