Just on a tangent, Heppel not overly impressiveas a midfielder on Saturday.

Bumber fans will tell you that he got the most contested possessions last week though :spin

Heppel is yet to do any damage in the midfield. Has struggled to build a inside game.

Reece is the better mid at this stage. Tackling and clearance numbers looking quite good.

Heppell reminds me quite a bit of Brent Prismall in his Geelong days. He knows he has to go hard and tries to do it but he’d rather avoid it. He will put his head over the ball but he looks like he’d rather be somewhere else when he does it.

It’s the same look my kids used to have whenever we dished up broccoli, spinach, zucchini or egg plant.

Or if you said,Let's go and get some haemorrhoids from a Thai Restaurant! ;D

I wish everyone would move on and stop comparing Conca to Heppel. Like or it not Heppel has so far proved himself the vastly superior player - ask non Essendon and Richmond supporters who they would prefer, and most would say Heppel. That doesn't mean Conca won't go onto to be a really good player. I for one think he will be very good, without being elite. If I'm proved wrong, then great.

Seagulls don't win you preimerships, hard nuts do and Conca is a hard nut. Heppell might look good in the H&A season but we need players who won't shirk or shy away from the hard ball when the finals whips are cracking, providing we get there of course.

Heppel is pumped up in the media a lot more than Reece - which would lead to non essendon supports basing there judgements on that. In the long term, Reece will be a much better player. And I would also hardly say at the moment that Heppel is vastly superior to Conca atm...

Bang on, Jumping Jack.

Essendon as a club are feted by the press, which is why solid citizens like Hurley, heppell and zaha somehow obtain god-like status.

Geez the bombers are annoying.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Laughed when I saw Seagull listed in the Hun as among Esserdope's best players. Spent all evening hovering off the packs looking for the spilled chip. Barely managed to get a few dodgy part smothered dribble kicks off in congested play.
Best suited to play a similar role to Bachar, sweeping half back flanker. Got decent skills, provides run n carry, good decision making to open up attacking space.
Lacks the big body n head over the ball bull dozer attitude required for working inside heavy traffic, nor silky enough to find time n space in there.
Used properly there's nothing wrong with a quality sweeper to open up a game for you, thinking Esserdope might be blundering badly trying the old square peg round hole scenario with Seagull.

The problem with the bummers is and always has been their overinflated value that they put on their players

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I'd take Conca over Heppell in a heart beat.

I'm surprised at how Essendon have gone about developing Heppell, playing him in a sweeper role across half back rarely playing on an opponent. Compare that to Conca who has been sent back to play an accountable role. Essendon tried to switch Heppell to the midfield last year but basically they get nothing out of him unless they threw him back as a loose man again.

Conca is showing now that he's ready to go into the guts and be more than a relief rotation midfielder. Throwing Heppell into the middle is like throwing an underfed native with a blunt spear in front of a Russian T34 tank and saying "sic'em". It's not usually pretty.

I'm not knocking the role of a sweeper. They have to know when to drop back and fill space, and when to run forward to create overlap to bypass the opposition sweeper (something i feel our sweepers don't do well enough when we play a loose man back). But i just don't think the role is an ideal way to introduce an 18yr old to AFL footy.
