Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Shame he is yet to have a full pre-season. Nevertheless, I expect further improvement from him this year, rate him highly.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Had my concerns about Reece early in the piece, but he put them to rest last year in just one passage of play. He took a short pass from the kick out, ran hard and intercepted the pass on the wing, hand balled off then kept running and collected the ball inside 50. If Tambling had run this hard more often he would still be wearing the yellow and black.

How he didn't get a free kick after Firrito cannoned into him and missed the ball is beyond me
l thought that hit may have been payback for last year

Like many of our players despite not having the full preseason he looked leaner and meaner. Same with Ellis and Martin.

I was thinking that too, but Firrito still should have been spoken to or Richmond given a free. Firrito is a poorly skilled thug who goes the knuckle when the gulf between his own modest skill and that of his opponent becomes blindingly obvious. He's a slight upgrade on Tim Fleming.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Very courageous from Reece to come straight back on after waving the doctor away.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

*smile* Firrito he's *smile*. Ask Dusty what he thinks of that weak prick. ;D

Mcguane or Jackson should've returned serve on him.
Time for pay pack will be the next time we play them. Nothing but a percentage booster!
North and espically now with Scott is my least favourite clubs.

How was that pass?!?! A meter off the ground, like a bullet. More of that please Reece!

Great vision and excellent execution.
Was really impressed with his tackling the other night too.
Another who looks set to take it up a cog.

I realise it sounds a little silly, but i've always held the view leg speed is overrated by most football observers when assessing midfielders potential. In my view decision making and execution speeds are lot more important attributes. Conca has both of them pretty right. With JUdd and Ablett notable exceptions many of the really great midfielders of recent times aren't particularly quick across the ground. I'm thinking here of Hayes, Mitchell, Swan and more recently Selwood.

It is not really that essential in an inside midfielder.

What I want to see from Conca this season is for him to be consistently racking up 20-25 possession games.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Agreee, leg speed is not paramount. They do need the ability to 'baulk' to evade tacklers.

Conca has this ability in spades. Has excellent evasion skills and decision making in tight.
Really reminds me of a young Cousins with his inside traits and vision.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Leysy agrees with evo that leg speed isnt a pre-requisite for mids that win plenty of inside ball. Strong over the ball, clean hands, vision, a quick couple of steps are the big ticket items.

On Reece, his evasion skills still need work for leysy, especially in really tight. Hopefully that comes with a bit more size/experience.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Tough as nails this kid.If we win games and his body holds up he'll eventually become a midfield regular.

Wasn't it Tom Hafey who said Greg Williams was "too slow, can't kick, can't mark"?
Nah! That was Cartoon when Diesel was a kid, they knocked him back twice.
Diesel then got a run at the Cats n followed Hafey to Sydaknee when the Cats wouldn't stump up an extra five large a year.
Cartoon were so impressed with Diesels form at Sydaknee that they stumped up plenty to bribe him away.

His Shepherd - 17.17 into 1st 1/2 Vs. Melb - to set up houlis' super goal was A grade - beautifully realised in the context of the play.
