Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Just knows how to hunt the footy down, similar to Boomer Harvey.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

saw him down Bridge rd a few months ago, he is definately
bigger in the upper body...reckon this kid is a ripper.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Shame he's had another limited preseason. Hard for a kid to build from that you'd expect. He will be a very important player for us but it may push his break out back another year.

We seem to be as worse or worse off than a lot of clubs in preseason injury issues. Chaplin, Riewoldt, Foley, Conca, Grimes, King just who I know of have been limited. I'm sure there's others. Few important names there.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

"The Crab" will finally start being of real value to the side when he stops going sideways as the first option whenever he gets the ball.

Let's hope we see something to (finally) back up the hype this season.

Pretty harsh.

Saw plenty last year.

if he learns to kick goals like Harvey then we have a true A grader on our hands, at the moment he seems timid in front of the goals but you never know what a bit of confidence can do.

I doubt you will find any post of me slating Conca, in fact I was in a distinct minority when it came to preferring Conca over Heppell. My original point does stand however, because it's one area of his game he needs to work on. He's kicked 5.10 in two seasons and his first instinct seems to be to pass to a team mate even when he's in a good position to score. Nothing major but if we could somehow manage to get 20 goals a season out of him then we'll have a very fine player on our hands.

when he gets the confidence and fitness to be able to settle and drill it, he'll be the complete Conca, agree.

Agree BH. I have high hopes for Conca. And the signs are there for a good season this year. But if he can add to the scoreboard as well then he will be the complete midfielder.

It's a bloody shame the kid can't get a full pre-season in. Until he does that we won't see what he is really capable of.

Think all 5 of those goals were 2012 yeah BH hopefully this is an upward trend. A couple of his goals were long bombs and beauties.

Wow, is that true? didn't he kick 3 in a game once?

The game against Melbourne where he scored 2 goals from outside 50 just highlighted what he's capable of, at the time I remember thinking there were shades of Matthew Knights in the way he played that day. Hopefully we see more of the same in the near future.

His agility and ability to sidestep is one of his great assets, it buys him more time and allows him to pick the best option. If I was to single out one area that he could improve in general play, it would be his habit of going to ground and being pinged for holding the ball. I actually thought he did that more in 2012 than in his debut year, but again, I don't think it's a major issue and overall think he's shown excellent composure for a second year player.

Key concerns with Conca are: going to ground and getting pinged (good players rarely get caught holding the ball), foot skills - too often is rushed in his kicking and tendancy to do a u-turn when he gets the ball.

However, 2013 will be only his third season, has never had a pre-season, and in his second season his number of possessions were comparable to Marc Murphy (now a superb footballer)

Fingers crossed!

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

How he didn't get a free kick after Firrito cannoned into him and missed the ball is beyond me

Firrito totally took the free shot, pg. Conca came straight back on. Just a flesh wound.
