Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Huge worry for mine.

Was obviously recruited for his decision making and elite skills, but I just don't see it. Being able to kick properly is something that can't be fixed overnight. Look at Edwards, his kicking has been a liability for 7 years and will never improve. Without elite skills what do people see in him? Isn't overly quick, can't break the lines, and it obviously undersized.

I don't like to mention recruiting blunders, but those who think we made the right decision by picking Conca over Heppell are on drugs. Would take Heppell over Conca every day of the week.

Two completely different players too. We need grunt midfielders - Heppel doesn't fit this mold.

We need players who can find the footy & importantly are composed with it. Heppel does that in spades.

He was hopeless, 4 FA isn't acceptable.

At least 3 of those frees were disgraceful frees that weren't there at all. Even Murphy holding Conca as well but add the fact the umpires were massively over officiating and Murphy is a name player is why they were paid. Cotchin gets them too. Can't slag him off based on those frees. Hell, a couple he barely even made contact with Murphy, just breathed on him.

Heppel very flustered on Friday night against Rioli.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

omg if i here one more bloody person say "we should have got heppell" id go completely nuts. You lot call heppell soft, which he is. He has been found out greatly with his disposal under pressure which isnt good. Conca is a much better long term prospect. Did no one see his hard run to get the ball from jack when no one was their to take a lead he gut ran 50 metres to get on the end of that ball.

Spot on, was a bloody joke (only not funny) Was good that the commentators were as astounded/ confused/ unimpressed as I was, made a nice change.

you've said this a million times, get over it.

I'm not going to get over it because he wasn't even a top 10 pick in any of the experts eyes.
Another wasted pick, lucky to be a top 50 pick.
That should make it a million and one times now!
So suck it up mate, the club can't draft to save it self!

The free kicks were shocking. Still doesn’t excuse the other 33 touches. Shocking coaching by Dimma. Conca is not a tagger, not even close.

If the goal was to educate Conca by playing him on one of the best in the game most people would say it was a success. I hope this is the case because I have no problem with Hardwick sacrificing performance this year for development and future performance.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

SAme response as last night.

That’s rubbish Disco. All week the club has spoke of still being in the hunt for finals. We were trying to win. Dimma was trying to win the game. And the move of Conca on to Murphy was crazy. Mostly because as a ball winner Conca has had his best three weeks as a AFL footballer. Why change his role?

And then after it was a train wreck, we kept going with it. And then when Muephy got off the chain in the last quarter we still didn’t make a move.

Poor coaching by Dimma that saw Conca have his equal lowest disposals for the year. Shocking move. Indefensible.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Sorry missed that last night SCOOP.

Would you expect Hardwick to admit keeping an eye on the future in a match against a rival like Carlton?

No drama.

I would expect Hardwick to have the best strategy to win the game. Simple. Conca as a tagger was crazy. He has played his best in the Foley role, getting the ball. Groom the kid for the long time role he will play. Three weeks in a row playing one role, then changing it seems crazy. Terrible coaching.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If Hardwick came out and said he did it because he believed Conca would benefit from in long term would you feel the same way?

Yep. Because long term getting flogged like that ain't good for him. And it played a part in us missing finals. I'd be madder.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Fair enough. I'd be all for it. He'd know as well as we do that we're very little chance of making the finals and zero chance of doing any damage this year with the lack of depth that's now exposed. I've also seen other good coaches employ similar tactics with young players. Masten for example was left to his own devices and well and truly beaten by better players in 2009 and it doesn't seem to be having a negative effect on him now.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Not sure Masten ever tagged. If Dimma did it this week and put Conca on Black or Tommy R no problem and we lost doing everything possible to win against Carlton that’s fair enough. But Saturday night was a must win. And I don’t care about winning finals, just getting there is worth 25 normal games to Cotchin, Martin, Conca.

The sooner we get into the finals the better. No harm in only getting a week worth of it.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Yeah, I just think we were always going to struggle to win enough games with the squad we have left to pick from. Gold Coast was really the end of the season as far as any finals aspirations were concerned and I think they probably realised it.

I remember seeing Masten play most or all of a game on Ablett that year and got absolutely flogged.

Agree about the GC game. I know Dimma said we can still make finals but lets face it we have 52k members and majority have no idea and need to be sold that hope. They won't pick up on little tinkering like people on here do. There was clearly an eye to the future there with Conca on Murphy. Won't suprise if Elton lines up at CHF this week either.
