Re: Adam Goodes

I'm not condoning either behaviour. I am surprised the AFL do. They'll never achieve their aim if they try and stop crowds booing but condone acts of aggression towards them from players on the ground.

Spot on. I get people don't like him and that's fine but if you stand alongside racists and 'boo', well in my eyes that makes you no better than them.
Time this went away.

IMHO 3000k away this all started because he was seen as undeserving of gongs by the average footy mug because of his general unsavory footy play.
Which was diligently highlighted byvrabid footy media. It escalted from there. Now booing Goodes is like going for a pie. You just do it.

rosy..it was celebrating indigenous day...a tradition war dance.....he stood up for himself...jetta stood up for him.......personally I've seen and heard so much in the outter of mcg that was worse...but each to their own...you didn't like it..i did...im not astounded by it at all
What tradition war dance?! It was made up. Not at all part of the culture.

The "traditional" war dance by the juniors was done pre-game at the opposition team - fair enough. Doing it at the opposition supporters is inciting trouble and should be frowned upon heavily. If the AFL allows it, then they have to allow players showing the bird to the crowd as well, otherwise the AFL is being racist!!!!

It's an expression of general disapproval based on different things which vary in proportion from person to person. If e.g. 25% of the motivation comes from resentment of an Aboriginal AOTY making unstatesmanlike comments, I'm not sure the media claiming it's 100% racist will stop someone.

It's kinda like Richo (but obviously more spiteful) - a lot of neutrals disliked him until 2008 because they thought the dummy spits were Richo. Goodes isn't a bad person, he just needs an image makeover. And there isn't much time. It'd be a shame if he was booed into retirement.

Just on Saturday, 1 day before yesterday's game, there was an article with him asking why he still gets criticised.
He really only has to watch a game of himself playing to work that out.

Is it racist at all not to like someone's comments? I didn't like Goodes' comments. I wouldn't like them if someone from any other race made them either.

Well said. Good summary.

Goodes sounded genuinely distressed last night and aside from the 'booing' legacy, I am also concerned about implications from the treatment on his mental health.

I honestly don't know, it's for others to hand out the labels. If it'd been a white person making the comments - "Australia is built on lies" etc - rather than someone from a minority while he's supposed to be representing all Australians, I would've been less annoyed. Maybe that does make me a racist. Been called a few other things, I can wear it. :)

The fact on this is that most people, and Australians in particular, don't like to be told what to do or how to think, especially by those who think they are intellectually superior. If everyone just shut up, it'd be a non-issue. Because the swans and the media keep bringing it up, it keeps happening just to spite them. And now that the AFL have put their 2 cents worth into it, it'll get worse. I dare say it has little to do with Goodes anymore. More to do with sticking a finger up at authority and the moral judgers amongst us.

here is the mentality of at least some booing him. He told Goodes to go back to the zoo but doesn't think its racist:

Clearly unintelligent

Originally maybe, many of the people doing the booing were not doing it as a racial vilification.

Now if they continue, they are joining in with the racists such as this flog and need to cop the label that they are racist.

I am a feral when I go to the football. I yell comments, I get stuck in to the non Richmond players and generally make a yob of myself.

Unfortunately this year in this debate there are two sorts of fans. The racists and the non racists.

What the racists have done is made it impossible for the non racist yobbos like me to boo Adam Goodes, because when you do you are joining the racists.

If we play them in the finals (unlikely, because of ladder position) I would be calling out anyone that booed as a racist regardless of whether you are or not.

If you want to join the racists and boo, than you have to accept you are a racist sympathiser.

Absolute b.s.
I don't have to accept any of a sort just because you say so. There may be some racists, there are plenty who think he's a total wanker. Who made you the decide who's which? Self righteous much?

If I were to boo him it's because he a wanker. Nothing more, nothing less. What about when WC fans booed Jobe, was that racist as well? Other players have been booed before and it will happen in the future.

Booo!

I don't agree uhuh. People are free to boo decisions, actions, umpires, whatever, for their own reasons without being judged and labeled as supporting racism or any other cause people want to bundle them in with. I don't know why they want to do it just the same.

The real travesty here is that the AFL are claiming WCE home fans are representative of all AFL fans
