Polak To Play Against Hawks

Well done big fella on your comeback. :clap

I reckon.

The great thing about his selection is that it doesn't appear to have been charity.

Seriously how much worse can he go than some others have been this year?

I wasn't a big fan of his as a player before the injury but his recovery to demand a game on his own terms has been nothing short of inspiring.

I hope he kills it. :fing32

Im not sure where you've been Rosy but Polly has come back from brain trauma.

Very condescending GO.

He's only relatively recently been given full games in the VFL firsts and has performed very well.

Yes and he's likely to be rewarded with senior selection for that but it's yet to be seen if he's up to the rigors of the elite level or not. I'm not indicating either way if he will be or not but I don't think his contract should be renewed just yet. I disagree with those alluding to him deserving it because he's come back from injury. Let him play a couple of games and then those in charge can decide.

I understood that the Tigers use the VFL affiliate Coburg to analyse players performance and reward on that basis.

Your point being? There have been others named in our best for Coburg who I don't expect will be around next season. It's not for me to analyse performance or claim who deserves contracts though. I'm happy for the powers to be, who I admit know a bit more than me, to make the decisions. I'm sure I'll find some easier to take than others

You have been harping on about rewarding performance in respect to Coughlan (and no arguments from me there) so why should Polak not be given the same opportunity?

Did I say Polly shouldn't be given the same opportunity? I think Cogs should have been rewarded with selection on form, as should Joel if Jade's comments in that regard were genuine, and I have no issues with Polly being rewarded on selection if his form warrants it either.

I said it's great to see Polly back but you conveniently edited that bit out when you quoted me. I'm really happy he's going to play..if the info is correct.

I think you're trying to paint me with a negative view of Polly and if so you'd be very wrong. I was one of his staunchest supporters here when we drafted him and I'm rapt he's come back from injury.

I think it's a token thing. If the club is smart they'll let him run through the banner (probably dedicated to him) then sit him on the bench for the rest of the game. Didn't Joel Bowden show last week that VFL form means very little in the AFL? The AFL game is faster and harder than VFL, I believe Polak runs the very real risk of being seriously injured if he plays more than a few minutes, especially if he still has the courage to stand there and take the hit so that he can get the mark as he used to do prior to the accident. I think the club will give him this and then send him on his way. He played well as a LMID, but that was Terry's game plan, he never marked an opponent closely enough when played as KP defender and when he was moved forward he could take a grab, but his conversion was woeful because he's a shocking set shot. Does the current Richmond side have room for a player with those deficiencies? Add to that the risk of serious injury and I don't think the club can do anything else other than cut him loose.

Dont know if he will go around again.

What I do know is that he has outplayed Hughes, Schulz, Graham , Patttison and Simmonds down at Coburg.

Now all of the above may be gone next year but for mine if the medicos say that he is OK mentally and physically (his fatigue, co-ordination and concentration issues have been adressed) I see no reason why we would delist him.

CTT his decison making when I have seen him at Coburg was very very surprising. midfield sharp in fact. Also didn't miss a target by foot. Kicked truly at goals. You never know - the lord works in mysterious ways!

Only real concern I have note is some awkwardness below his knees sometimes. He still clunks his marks but is quite different in that he doesn't appaer to float and jump the way he used to but more often stands his ground and uses his size, Surprisingly effective as a ruckman at VFL level.

Apologies if you saw it like that. Just responding to your question of why Polak hasnt played a game of AFL footy this year if he's performed so well and I thought that is pretty obvious. I know a bit about brain trauma and I am amazed he's been able to make it to where he has. Character and determination are high on my list of personal traits.

Only quoted the part I was responding to.

No not at all.

Polak will get another year. He deserves it. Has been playing very well in the reserves and deserves a spot ahead of the likes of Moore who has performed very poorly this year.

It seems Moore performed well for Coburg too.

From EOTT

Kelvin Moore
Had his first Coburg game for the year after being dropped from the Richmond side. Played centre half-back on several different opponents and completely nullified their impact. Also picked up 18 possessions himself, and regularly won the ball back, to be a very valuable player for us on the day.

Good, so if he can string a few together then he'll get his opportunity again. Unfrotunately the season end is near so probably wont see Moore in the 1sts again this year. I am sure he will be ready to go next year and would love to see him get back to his 2008 form.

Goodluck to Pollie, I hope he does well. To come back from that sort of injury is nothing short of inspirational and if his appearance can't motivate this lot of sheep into wolves for this game (noting that we beat Hawthorn last year by 29 points, plus they are missing a few players now), then the playing list needs a real hard swift kick up their collective backsides.

As for a new contract, I don't have a problem with that, we are short on talls that can go forward or back, plus with the expected cull to come, there won't be many players of 25 years old or over with experience around. If Pollie can play out the last two games and do reasonably well in both of them, then I'd say he should be given the opportunity to play on in 2010 (even if its just a 1 year contact with an option to extend by one year), I think he's worked damn hard to get back to where he now is, like I said he's got motivation, its an outstanding example to his team mates, that hard work will give you what you want, but you've got to work at it, he's done his bit, its time for the team to do their bit for Pollie.

Good luck Polly, hope you have good one. I thought it be a bonus if he played again and never really considred within 12 months so this is great effort.

If all things go well and is given medical clearance, I cant see why he would not get a 1 year contract.
If medically fit, its a lot of work and patience to get rid of him after 12 mths just when he is right.

Good observations. IF Polly can prove over the next few weeks that he's up to the speed of senior AFL then it wouldnt surprise me to see the new coach use him next year in the ruck, much like Collingwood have used Leigh Brown. Going on his pre-injury strengths, he would get plenty of the ball around the ground, is a good marking target and his field kicking is not bad (better than Simmo and Patto). As you say, he is also a good size and has some weight to throw around.

Best of luck Polly.

Excellent post oh great Warrior. Plenty of men on the list with less heart and balls than Polly.

Absoulty rapt for Polly.........I personally would like to see him used as a back up ruck now(Ryder Clarke type ruck) and into 2010, played his best game in that role against the Crows before he came to us and was very good. Personally rate him higher then Moore and can play back and forward as well.

lot of sentiment flowing about this thread. stuff that forget sentiment but a bit of plain old brutal honesty.
was ordinary before the accident and i see no reason why things will change delist.

Supporters in general aren't responsible for that stuff claw. Let people be sentimental, the bloke deserves it.
