Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

This. Garthwaites distances covered are not just elite for a defender, they are elite for any type of AFL player full stop. He’s covering Tom Scully like distances circa 2016-2017.

Don't understand how this is possible, he's following his man most of the game which would mean his opponent would rack up similar distances. Not like he's a mid that can run up and down to the fwd line and back line all day.

Most defenders still roll up as far as the forward 50 multiple times throughout the game.

In Garthwaite's case his endurance allows him to keep rolling to the hit up forward which leaves Astbury and Grimes deep.

Which would explain Astburys improved form since Garth was included. Doesn't have to follow the long leads and can send Garth while he stays deep.

Spot on.

Our structure is in tact. Garthwaite now plays Grimes role and Grimes plays the Rance role.

Its not mate. Check the boards when Rance was first playing, many were giving him grief. Those sticking it to Garth are a bit far off the mark here.

But yes, my use of the word infinitely was a bit far off the mark as well.

Check who posted the crap on rance, think you’ll find zips style posters.

Not sure why he is getting slack. Ball was coming in with ease. Astbury is the dud. Kid is still raw. Will be fine.

Defenders had poor positioning all night. It was hard to see from out here in iPad land buts something was going really wrong down there.

Lucky being a footballer comes down to more than that. He’s an old school defender, which there will always be a place for.

He’s hardly SOS material...

He was thrown to the wolves tonight. Poor match up from the start. Why Astbury didn't start on Brown I'll never know
