Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Garthwaite not being selected, hard to know under what circumstance he would be selected. Needed to get some body on Naughton. Allowed to fly for pack marks far too often.

Agreed.

Garth should've played, he did ok on Hawkins last year. Playing Grimes and Broad playing as our two talls was a mistake.

Having no pressure on them through the midfield letting them stream forward at will into space was an even bigger mistake.

they were plucking marks from everywhere.
they virtually did what collingwood did with Cox

Carthwaite isnt the answer. too slow for this game.
do our recruiting team ever select talls that have played the game.

Speed wasn't the answer Zips we needed a KPD who would stay with their man and not sponge off.

Garthwaite would do that.

Rubbish. Give Garthwaite a fair go before writing him off as too slow. He has good closing speed and is quicker than Astbury who's been successful.

do you want me to post the GWS game to you.
Cameron was running away from him like a Gazelle.

play him, i dont care. all im saying we had opportunities over the summer to grab another tall defender from the VFL or Roughead. but we settled for a bloke we have 300 of.

I've seen GWS game. He was totally underdone. Hadn't even played a full vfl game after a decent injury and lack of pre season. Shouldn't have been picked. This week with Astbury out we needed another lock down player. Hardwick admitted in presser that there needed to be more body contact on Naughton. Garthwaite would have provided that. Better than having Broad do it and Ellis trying to play Broads role in the backline.

After Astbury's knee injury - when he was back in the side you would have thought he needed to do a 3-point turn to change direction - he was that slow and lumbering. You don't notice that now. I assume Garthwaite will get back to his best eventually when his body confidence returns.

Garth had no pre-season and half a game in the VFL, playing on Cameron was a poor match up, as was Broad on Naughton last night.

Straight from The Fly's mouth:

Ryan Garthwaite

11 disposals, eight spoils, four marks & six rebound-50s

“Defended extremely well, was hard to play on and had six rebound-50s. Is playing AFL footy at VFL level, and his eight spoils led the team.”

I'll say it again

Garth wouldn't have got a centre clearance, which is where we lost it IMO.
