Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Garthwaite's DNA comes from 2 x sources and they aren't his mother and father.

It comes from Astbury and Grimes.

This bloke is the perfect in-between.

Maybe his mum and dad are Astbury and Grimes.

Yep he'd already be playing regular afl at other clubs. Top quality player.

Challenging statement TL. Can't see Ryan breaking up Astbury, Grimes, Rance and Broad anytime soon. So when does he get a game or say goodbye I have to leave? Exactly the sort of player worth raiding.

Played a great game last night and deserves his spot - but who do we put out? Maybe we should try him down forward given he was a junior forward if what I read it correct.

His height and ability to get to a contest would help Jack surely.

He is going to be a ripper is young Francis.

Very promising I reckon. Composed for a young fella and very tough.

Looks we are set for CHBs for the forseable future.

Right now, just plays within his limitations, limits his risk, halves contests.

For a late pick, he’s a real find. What shocked me is how physically he looks a mature body size and build.

Turns 21 half way through next year. Huge upside and will learn from the best.

Maybe I am alone, but I rate this young man and think he would be a better option than Broad. Has the size, the speed and the smarts and to be honest Broady isnt the sharpest tool in the shed.Would hate to lose this guy out of lack of opportunity.

I would have thought Broad has more agility and therefore greater flexibility for the backline. Garth seems to be the more traditional KPP defender. But he is a beauty no doubt.

Perhaps in a year or two. But I'd still go Broad now. Broad has more size and is better with the ball in hand. Didn't have a great game v the Bummers but perhaps he as trying to step up a bit to cover for Astbury.

There is an opportunity to trial a few blokes in the forward line over the off season.

Astbury started as a forward, Garth has played there in the juniors, we toyed with Rancey forward last year, and Flossy this year.

CoJo and Balta could train there too.

Have to have a rethink if Lynch comes across.

I'm actually starting to wonder whether it would be better if he doesn't.

Yep. Watched the replay yesterday n young Garf simply shuffled his way back to defence after he got his head split open. Just wasn't gunna go off n leave a hole down back until the maggots noticed he was bleeding n sent him off under the blood rule stoppage. Got some cred the young fella.

Good point TM.

This young bloke is a solid player. If we can hang onto him I think we've got a long term KPP.

He currently plays well within his limitations and keeps it simple, but with more exposure/experience I think he'll take the game on more.

It's funny looking back on early comments on his kicking style. Watching his early outings he did look awkward but accurate (and with distance you wouldn't expect from such a kicking style), but now, I barely notice it. Probably a combination of more handballs and predominantly short passes to a team mate.

Still learning the professional game and so far making a good fist of it. Has so much promise for the future but needs another season before he is cherry ripe for a permanent place in the firsts providing he keeps improving. He is a smart lad and knows his limitations and keeps working on them at the best club in the league so unlikely to be going anywhere

Has the confidence to leave his man to make a contest, had the 2nd most 1%er's. A ready replacement for any of Rance, Astbury, Grimes and Broad.

Agree, he's an awkward looking kick, bit robotic, but very tidy with it. Doesn't blast n blaze away, spots his option n puts it where it needs to be. Hoping young Garf just keeps on developing, not gunna get a free ride into the team as we're in a purple patch but reckon he could easily build himself a fine career over the next ten years.

This bloke is a great role player. He will play a lot of football for us over the next decade.
