Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

Kicked 3 goals in his debut from memory.

Definitely worth considering trying up forward.
Him rotating with Jack at FF / CHF.
Moving McDonald from back to forward for Melbourne has worked well.

Be prepared for him to be monstered on the odd occasion in the seniors. His strength whilst good is not AFL first team ready. This talk about him stepping into Astbury's role and not missing a beat is misplaced.

Couldn’t agree more.
Thought he was slightly disappointing last Sunday even allowing for him playing in a weakened backline.

Too often we pump up someone too early in their careers and then hammer them when they don't meet expectations. Garthwaite may well be fine as an emergency inclusion but still needs a little more time to be AFL ready as you say

More Grimes than Astbury.

I worry he is more Grimes' size, but more Astbury's mobility.
If that is right I am not sure what role he can play at AFL level.

Does remain to be seen if he'll make the transition. One thing Grimes has had to work very hard on is the offensive side of his game. It's where Broad probably has it over both because a third tall back really has got to have a few strings to their bow.

Jenkins walker westhoff darling Kennedy curnow roughy
Mostly on Away trips

This kid is good. Astbury needs a break. Couldn't bare another week watching him out marked by a smurf.

Better be good.
You only get one chance, stuff it up and it’s back to the VFL.
