Pick 53: Jack Graham

Showed an appetite for the contest that has been lacking in some of our other top draftees of recent years.
Yes he does Toby. I posted that we had one here after watching him in Ballarat a few weeks ago. He just looks a natural footballer - not fancy, just gets the ball and places huge pressure on the opposition.

Just watched the replay (finally) -- gotta say, I'm surprised there's not more hype around Graham - what a debut! YEs he's good in the contest and tackles - but also looks to be a smart footballer great / fast hands and good kick (that pass across his body pure skill) This guy seemed to step up into AFL after only a couple of VFL without breaking stride. Pretty excited to see how he goes again on Sunday

Yep very smart user within his limitations. AFL ratings rated him 9th best out of the 44 that took the field.

that kick to deliver a forward 50 pass, outside of the right foot, perfectly placed and weighted reminded me of Dusty at his best. Some magic with the right. Dusty now is using more of his left to penetrating effect too. On just one game may be the best OVER 50 draft pick we have seen for some time. If he can build on his tank and his body helps up there will be 17 other clubs asking how did we miss this one.

Early days but so much to like. fingers crossed he has a real crack a at a full pre season. If we go deep in September, the spotlight will shine on of a 3-4 gamer. Amazing.

A pure footballer who loves the contest. If he can get super fit and become a running machine I could see JR becoming one of the premier midfielders in the AFL.

I don't think he will play finals but great for him to get a taste of it.

Shouldnt that be JG?

Correct. JG.

Not saying he isn't capable of playing in finals just think Dimma will stick with the main that got them to this spot. Caddy will replace Townsend, JG will come out for a shuffle of the backline with Short coming back in.

His biggest problem is his lack of fitness. He was cooked up a few times on Sunday but that is only due to the injuries he has being battling since we drafted him. Attitude and application is no problem.

Built for finals. Most tackles and pressure acts in the least amount of time on field. We have seen what has happened to players like Houli, Grigg, Ellis, Edwards etc in finals... we need blokes who crack in and won't go to water early when the game is hot. Take the risk as we have done all year and put faith in the kids. Play him.

Ghost, I agree that Graham has missed a lot of conditioning work but I still think his ability to get from contest to contest is excellent and will next year be elite. Part of him looking cooked I believe is we finally have a midfielder that will max himself out Robert Harvey/Ben Cousins like, might need to invest in a spew bucket for his rotation ;D
He is not super quick but more than adequate, great inside and can spread out due to his work rate. I think he described himself a good honest midfielder, that will do but I think he may turn out a tad better than that.

If he plays a decent game Sunday he will play finals
His contested inside work and tackling is what finals is all about

What I really like about JG was his second efforts. stuff handball went in again and got it out.

Have a great game JG this sunday.

I agree with this, Townser and Markov are going to be the ones most in danger if they don't perform.

Townser as he came in for Caddy will likely make way for him and Markov will likely make way for Griffins if he is fit.

They will be tempted to bring Griffo back i reckon.

Another poor gamer from George should see him out of the side but probably wont.

He is too much of a momentum killer for mine to be playing in September when every shot at goal is a t a premium we cant afford blokes duffing 20 30 metre shots at goal killing momentum and stopping score board pressure going on the opposition.

I dont trust George to be able to do this.

Not sure about this. The way i see it, Caddy came in as a big body desperately required for the mid field, but due to our undersized forward line, got stuck in a pocket. If Townsend can fill this role then Caddy is freed up for exactly what we recruited him for.

Caddy is too slow. Only way he plays midfield is towards the end of a game when the pace has gone out of it.
