Pick 53: Jack Graham

It's easy to understand. We have players who sacrifice to be "richmond men". Cotchin did that better than anyone. He went from a Brownlow Medallist type performance, to getting 15 possessions and smashing a dozen packs a game for others.

Graham is similiar. He sacrifices his game, to be a Richmond man. That's why he has leadership material. He does the selfless task for us. When he's been asked to go accumulate possessions, he's been able to do it more often than not. It's just we don't ask him to do that often. He's an accumulating type player, who sacrifices that side of his game to help us win.
This is an excellent post General & I agree with a lot of that. It's also why I posted that Cotch signing on for another year might have got him thinking. All list decisions lead to a snowball affect. Just like we lost Chol & CJ largely because JR played on. Younger players even if not at the level of these elder champions are looking for opportunity. This is not to say Cotch & Jack shouldn't be on our list.
JG wants to be a starting midfielder. He's right in the prime of his career & wants to take the next step. That's fair enough.
Whether he can get to the elite level on that front I have my doubts but can see why he is hunting the opportunity. A club like Adelaide would see him a certain starter.
There's no doubt Jack Graham is a valuable player. If he heads home or to another club we'd want to be well compensated.

So our B&F system is utterly flawed?
Players can be moved on from quickly despite high BnF finishes.

Anthony Miles was 4th in our BnF in 2015. Miles finished 6th in 2016 but was dropped in and out a few times. Then completely out of the side by 2017.

no one gives us that for RCD. it's more likely 3rd or 4th rd, surely.
Others will disagree but I believe I saw a significant improvement in the two way running of CJD over the course of last season. His defensive work also improved and in a lesser team he would have been given a chance at AFL. COVID also impacted his progress. Ditto Stacky.

Both will be setting themselves for ‘23
and I’d expect both to attract significant
interest from other clubs. But imo both have futures at Punt road and I hope they stay.

Think T Stengle.

I wonder if Jack was going back to Adelaide end of next year so club is seeing if this year can get it done?
Port seem very keen, they're sniffing around harder than Wayne Carey at the casino.

And he shows his stuff in another jumper?

Then we take a breath and resume laughing.

Maybe you see more in RCD than I do, but even in the 2's, he seems to think he's stronger than everyone else (maybe this is still the big kid in him playing footy) and he just tries to crash through tackles. Its actually very dumb footy, as his disposal is then impacted by the tackler, and his disposal then is poorer than it should be. Personally I don't see him making it.

AGGH it seemed you were on the CJD side of things for a moment there Posh,- but not to be.

Agree with your observations concerning his sometimes labour ineffective work in packs. But hey at least he was there (late year), and that to me was a significant change.

Dusty he will never be, but his attack on the ball and opponent and improving self belief, was up 10 fold over maybe the last 6. He is fast and talented and despite our early disappointment he has begun to track towards a much better chaos type game, which I note was rewarded with a new contract. Expect him to get better. Did I mention he is fast.

Have been a big supporter of giving RCD time given the club knew he was going to take some time. Then covid hit and you have to factor that in.

I think the reality is he’s not going to make it at the Tiges. That was such a hard midfield to break into on top of the other factors. Might be better for him to go somewhere like North where he’s got more of a chance to break into a team. I’d take a third round pick for him.

Jack Ross took some steps this year and although he’s not perfect I reckon in the clubs rankings in the midfield he’s got RCD covered even if the play slightly different roles

I'd obviously love him to make it (as I do with all Tiges Draftees), I just don't see where he excels. His awareness is just not there, he may win the ball but then he runs into a tackle, trying to take them on, can't get a handball away so just shovelling it forward to no-ones advantage. If he could win the ball and distribute by hand, then there might be a chance, but he still doesn't seem strong enough to break the tackles in the same way that Cripps etc does.

Cripps he is not but obviously the club see something.
