Pick 53: Jack Graham

Over the last few years the players who other clubs have come after have either been those that couldn't get a game or free agents. This is a bit of a test case for us, as it would be for Broad as well to a lesser extent, because he is a player of real value in the market and if he were to go we should expect good compensation.
That hasn't been our MO in recent years when giving away Butler, CEllis and Miles for virtually nothing but this is different imo.

So he is torn between
Richmond's 2 year contract at say $480K per year with possible two premierships being loved by the Tiger Army or
Carlton's 4 year deal at say $700K per year with no premierships and being despised by the Tiger Army

Caution I am only guessing at the figures trying to work out why he is torn

Sorry champ your numbers are wrong
Carlton 650-700 4 yrs
Richmond 400 2 years

This I totally agree with.

Why leave playing with Cotch (who he is very close with) Dusty and Jack and Tommy and Sheds, Grimes and Vlas to go and play with them spuds.

The other arguement I've seen has merit too in regard to him taking the big money now in case his shoulders go tits up
Yeah the shoulder risk and striking while the iron's hot is the gap here. If he was to play in a second flag this year he might decide he's got achievement and the memories now get the cash. Reasonable position to take too, I'm still guessing he goes for more glory short term.

It's true. Bit shattered.
I think you've posted before that you have a connection with the Graham family. Are you saying it's true that he has a received a huge offer from Carlton and you're shattered because he is going to accept it?

That would be very disappointing for us if that's the case. I too would be shattered if he left to go to that cheating scumbag club. If so we need to play massive hardball on a trade. I'd rather see him walk in the PSD to Adelaide than go to Carlton for an unders trade. And you can guarantee that's what they'll be trying to do. They missed out on Papley last year for the same reason. They offer huge money to a player but won't offer adequate compensation to his current club.

The brown paper bags are out at Carlton again it appears.

Graham $650K per year for 4 years? I really like him but that is massive overs. $500K per year is about his maximum value.

WTF is going on at Carlton? Paying massive overs. $900K for Williams; that's top 10 in the comp pay for a bloke who in 8 years has never even made an AA squad of 40. Do they have a larger salary cap than the rest of the AFL? Or is it the brown paper bags again?

Simpson out save 550
Kreuser out save 600

Gripps 850k
Murphy sign 1 year deal 450
McGovern 650
Martin 750k this year then 600k 3 years
Withering will get over 500 next deal.
Plowman & Hatchback both 400k

They would have not many others commanding more then 400k.
They have cap space

This could all still be media beat-up too. Probably just dredging up a non-story that started around the time he got dropped, along with Broad, and while Nank was out, about about tigers who couldn't get a game that are seen as gettable by other clubs. He'd be one of the first picked now and I doubt he's even gettable. He's a potential future leader of the club, still very young.

We need to start thinking about a succession plan after Cotch/Jack as captain/vice captain and I reckon this bloke could be up there in their thinking for one of those roles moving forward. Who else do we have that could be one of those leaders in 2 years time? Current leadership group is aging, I don't think Dusty would want the media attention that comes with being captain full time.
Grimes, Astbury, Edwards, Houli, Jack, too old. Our next generation of leaders needs to start now. Guys like Graham, Ross, Baker, Bolton are our future, can't let them go now

Really hope we don’t lose Jack, however if we do and I know the maths don’t make sense , however I’d be going hard after Ollie Wines

650k isn't overs for graham.

More valuable than alot of stat chasers around the league who'd be on more than 650k

should it happen , jack Ross is a ready made replacement IMO

Carlton have been so ordinary for so long they probably front loaded a number of contracts to allow for a fair bit of coin to throw around this year.

As others have said, another premiership this year, a long term offer on coin too good to be true and a couple of dodgy shoulders may just make the rumoured Carlton offer hard to refuse.

However for a midfielder from the best team of the past 4 years, with one, and possibly a second premiership (and we all know should've been two already) nothing short of their current first round selection would be adequate value.

If Cotch is seriously thinking of giving it away, offer Graham a vice captaincy.

Believe some clubs are allowed ( according to reports I’ve heard ) have been allowed to go to 105% of their salary cap??

Like to know what the Tigers are doing.

This is some bad management by clubs if true and members should be asking questions of their clubs.

Aint gone yet mate
On the inside lane here Craig.

As of yesterday he is going, but that was still second hand information. It just really bummed me that it was confirmed. I thought he would be captain, even as early as next year the way he is playing and leading. Wish I could say more but I honestly don't know.

Some still undervalueing graham. With Cotch nearing the end, graham becomes even more important if we want to continue this dynasty. We need to match or get close

The AFL couldn't run a 5 years old birthday.
Unless wages like in the premier league are out in the open, there will always be back room deals.
Bale is going back to Tottenham and he will be on £180k a week.
Rodriguez to Everton £110k a week.

So why is such a secret in AFL?
Open up the books and allow the public to know the numbers therefore it will cut out constant talk about cap cheating or side deals.
