Pick 29: Shai Bolton

I have no issue with Shai leaving with where Richmond are and will be the next 4-5 years
We have enjoyed his game and served us well and is leaving to a club with good draft capital (Eagles or Freo)

What i will have an issue with is if we dont get maximum trade value for him from either club
Shai is worth a top #3 pick in this draft and if he selects eagles then #3 must be the trade
If he selects Fremantle then #9 + #10 must be non negotiate able and Blair must stand firm as Freo need Shai more than we need their picks as they have the most to lose by not getting the exact piece they require to win their 1st flag specially with their coach in his last year and will be demanding this piece.
Freo are crazy if they dont go 100% for Bolton.
No point them winning the trade week

They will go 100% i have no doubt , I just hope Blair goes 100% for the thought and grab their picks we want

Fremantle have shown in the past when trading out contracted players they extract max value with trades like
Weller #2 Shultz #10+#34

We must demand #9 + #10 before any salary contribution is discussed

Just a reminder for those that are happy to see Shai leave and were underwhelmed by his output in a *smile* side.
I'll also say that Yze missed a trick by telling Shai pre-season that he would be pretty much be stationed as a forward. He should of told him to train for the midfield based on some of the numbers below and spent more time there.

Agreed and this was the biggest mistake that Yze made in pre-season. Saying Dusty would be a full time mid, and Shai would be a full time forward. Got it the wrong away around. We saw Dusty in 2023, he was never going back to a full time mid role. His body was never going to allow him to do that and thats exactly whats occurred.

It was really frustrating to watch Shai for a lot of the season, standing 10m behind the last defender whilst the rest of the players were in and around our D50. People will say "Shai was lazy" blah blah blah, but it happened way too regularly for it not to have been within the gameplan. No wonder he might have got frustrated and not fully understanding the gameplan, when our mids were getting trounced and he was standing around essentially doing nothing 1 out.

Both can be true.

He has potential to be spoken about as one of the leagues best. The impact of a Bont, Heeney, etc.

He's not at that level, because he's settled at his current output. He's better than that, just not hungry enough yet.

General, u and those who agree with you have overlooked the delivery coming out of the midfield this year and the absence of support from team-mates able to assist his game when he was forward.

Given these handicaps his efforts this year were far stronger than we had any right to expect.

I'm not just talking about this year. It's been a theme for Bolton his whole career. I disagree his efforts were acceptable this year. One thing to say our delivery wasn't good enough, it's another thing to look disinterested and half assed. Given hs wage, effort and intensity shouldn't be optional.

This guy could be feared in this league, a poster boy like Heeney, Bont, etc. He could turn games in a quarter. At the moment, its on his terms, not every week. If we could be guaranteed that player, I wouldn't trade him. 8 years, and he's not got there consistently. I'm over estimating him, or he's not pushing himself enough.

Disagree. Although far better equipped to play in the midfield he was consistently left to play forward in a team which battled to get the ball forward. And on the relatively few occasions it did come in the delivery was poor and he was double teamed, and additionally had to cope with umpires who gave a tick to blocking him out.
And the coach did f. a.

If he gets to Freo they should be amongst the flag favourites.

Bolton/Serong/Young/Brayshaw/O'Meara/Fyfe all offer quality centre clearance and stoppage work and most are natural goal kickers.

Bolton is the missing piece for that club.

Waddaya gonna do? Players rule the roost in this comp. In the US or Euro they often get shipped of to where ever and like it. In Backwater Inc it just doesn't happen that way.
Here we are. Get prepared for a hard 2-3 season slog. It's a price I'm willing to pay for our next flag within 10.

You're making excuses for him and ignoring the conversation. Bolton has choices. Stay and fight or take the easy path.
We'll get our two picks thanks.

He is our best player by a country mile but set up to fail by the match committee, leading to its’ decisions made about where and how he was to play that position.

The club wanted to trade him as the liklihood of his playing in another grand final, given the team around him, is now very small. I get that and can accept that he has been sacrificed for the long term advantage of the club.

But what I don’t appreciate are those who seem intent on blaming him for his present situation and pressing on with crap about his lack of endeavour.

And comparing him to Bont and Heeney conveniently overlooks the freedom both were given to play midfield as and when they saw fit, and the defensive qualities of the players around them.
And so occasionally he may have looked a little frustrated a little disinterested.
He loves the game. He loves to compete with the best.
But after Lynch went down our season was seen as effectively over. Then Dusty. And thereafter club reacted a bit like Dimma did after the ESS loss.
Season’s done. What’s next.
