Pick 17, 20 & 25

Apparently Stephenson has a condition (I believe it to be) called Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Ahhh just saw this good work Willo.

Yeah thats not flash news for the lad Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy aint great.

For those non medical professionals out there, in Layman Terms Hypertrophic basically means over growth of tissue in the case of the heart which are called myocytes, and instead of the body braking down and eliminating old dead and dying tissue in this condition it just keeps growing making the walls of the heart thicker and wider and less able to function as a pump.

This leads to congestive heart failure down the track.

If the heart cannot pump effectively to meet the physiological demands of elite sport it will be found out quickly, and hence is usually a career killer in many elite sports.

He has obviously undergone scans, and stress tests and Echocardiograms to test his heart flow, function and physical capabilities and dimensions ie wall thickness atrial and ventricular outputs, valvular function, capacities and other hypertrophic evidence.

Very bad news for the lad, just wondering whether or not the lad had actually been symptomatic at any stage to some degree for it to be investigated and found out, however he may not have been as Electrocardiograms do actually indicate Hypertrophy of the heart muscle so it may likely have been investigated after being discovered on a standard ECG during physical exam, then further investigation via scan or Echocardiogram

No doubt there will have been numerous Doctors, Cardiologists and Exercise Physiologists all over this young fella.

Thats a fantastic explanation Craig

If what you say is the situation and im sure it is as you would know what you are talking about
Then it doesnt look like the kid can continue with AFL for more than a couple of years and would be advised to not continue.

Cant see how clubs could take the risk not because of the draft pick but because of the implications to do with doing more damage to the kids health or escalating the issue

His own specialist has already cleared him and said there is no issue though

Wow. This Stephenson thing is a curly one. I want to take the punt on Bonar but I don’t think we will get the chance.

But with three picks. I’d do it on Stephenson. Risk reward. We cans still get the talls.

But this draft is impossible to forecast. Will require a lot of thinking on the spot, a lot of picks to require extra time.

Bolta issues about his love of the game and general attitude are seeing him fall like a stone. Think I still would.

Stephenson, Brander, Balta & Naish. Would be a dream result.

Then its not as much an issue then, as i said this kid will have been poked prodded scanned graphed and had every test under the sun by Cardiologists and Electrophyisiologists I'm sure so if they give him the thumbs up then good luck to the kid.

I was explaining the condition and why most with it after diagnosis don't go on.

And there are no guarantees re injuries - think of Schanburg ? with Collingwood and Freeman with his hammies who is now at the saints.

That Twomey fella has late mail saying we might go Nathan Murphy with pick 17. Anyone have any input
On this guy

Agree, Scooper. As premiers, we are well placed to take the punt. Ryan Burton all over again I hope.

Thanks, Craig and Willo for your work on Stephenson's heart condition.

I'm totally confused about Stephenson, yesterday his manager came out and said he's been cleared of anything serious and that he was free to join the AFL. But then I read Craig's diagnosis and it looks dire. My understanding was that he would only require medication but who knows really, it may all rest on the post draft tests. Bit of a gamble but if he's cleared we land a top 5 prospect at 17.

Agree, Stephenson, Brander, Balta & Naish would be 10/10.

The FoxFooty phantom draft has us taking Lochie O'Brien at 17. They say Stephenson will be gone by either Pies or Eagles pick.

Would you be happy with the gamble, Paul?

Anyone else have an opinion on Stephenson at 17? Would people rather just go with Brander given the opportunity?

Given where our picks are & coming off a flag, it's a gamble we can afford to take.
Many think Brander will make it to 20. pretty much everyone has us taking him.

Last 6 games of the season he averaged 28 touches, 4 clearances, 6 tackles and earnt 50% of his disposals in contested situations. Capped that off with a BOG in the All-Stars match, 22 disposals & 3 goals. To put all this into perspective, Dow averaged 22 for the year and he's a likely top 3 pick. The two players with the biggest upside are Rayner & Stephenson, both have physical question marks but both could be A grade match winners. The difference being one will be picked at the top of the tree and the other will be a late first rounder.

Thanks again Bully. :thumbsup

A draft like this is as exciting as having a top 5 pick, sounds like it’s possible we could have a great draft with no picks inside 15, bottom line is we most likely won’t know for the next 3 or 4 years. I’m tipping a Smokey for us in the first 3, Petty ?
