Pick 17, 20 & 25

A draft like this is as exciting as having a top 5 pick

It's almost more exciting because of the unpredictability around 10-30, and the fact that it seems like a pretty even draft. Good times

If Stephenson has Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), then we probably shouldn't be drafting him. But I find it hard to believe that any cardiologists would clear him to play if he actually has HOCM.

There are 2 main issues when it comes to HOCM and athletes.

1. The limitations on cardiac output. As Craig has explained there is hypertrophy or enlargement of the heart. And because of this, there is also an obstruction to the flow of blood out of the heart. This obstruction is dynamic, and is worsened when there is less blood volume in the heart - eg. dehydration, and when heart rate is increased. So some people with HOCM are asymptomatic at rest, but develop symptoms on exertion.

2. Athletes with HOCM are at increased risk of sudden cardiac death, due to changes in cardiac tissue and development of fatal arrhythmia's. Although the risk of sudden cardiac death is low in young people, the risk is definitely increased in people with HOCM.

Because of these reasons, guidelines recommend people with HOCM do not participate in elite competitive sport.

However, sometimes it can be very difficult to distinguish HOCM from the normal physiological enlargement of some athletes hearts due to the effects of intense training.

If HOCM was the concern and he has in fact been cleared to play, then I suspect what may have happened was that initial screening picked up an enlarged heart, but after further testing, his specialists have concluded this is athletes heart and not HOCM, but there must be some uncertainty for so many clubs to be hesitant to draft him.

So what does anybody know about Charlie Ballard? A couple of phantom draft has us taking him.

I dont know if its related to being the reigning premiers,

but I cant remember a draft where

1. we didnt telecast who we were into,
2. The Phantoms or Emma Q didnt telecast who we were into, or
3. There wasnt a high degree of agreement on PRE as too who we were into and who we wanted.

Im really excited about our first ever premiership draft.

anything could happen, and if it could only happen at Richmond, then thats a good thing now.

Im off to bed so tomorrow comes faster. :fing32

Looks like its going to be a very interesting night tomorrow night, going to be a few surprises too by the sounds of it.

The more I think about it I see us calling out Brander with pick 17.

Apparently we have done a fair bit of homework on this kid.

Twomeys late mail top 30 has us landing:

17. Murphy
20. Brander
25. Hayes
28. Naish

Stephenson going to WCE at 13.

Collingwood & Richmond still weighing up position on Jaidyn Stephenson

LITTLE more than 24 hours from the national draft, Collingwood and Richmond are still weighing up their position on one of the most talented players in the pool — Eastern Ranges forward/midfielder Jaidyn Stephenson.

The Magpies and Tigers were understood to be still awaiting medical clearance to select Stephenson, who has a heart condition that has seen some clubs rule him out of selection in the first round — a stance that the Stephenson camp feel is alarmist and not justified.

The Tigers, indeed, have been considering whether they can pick Stephenson, in part because they think there is a chance that the speedster will slide down to Pick 17 — the premiers’ first of three picks inside the top 25.

But West Coast and Sydney are believed to have cleared Stephenson medically with both interested in drafting him. The Eagles have Pick 13, which would give them first shot before the Swans at Pick 14.

A number of clubs with picks in the first 20 have ruled out selecting Stephenson, including Carlton, while St Kilda is also considered unlikely to pick him at either Pick 7 or 8 and GWS is keen on other players at Pick 11.

With Brisbane certain to nominate forward Cameron Rayner at Pick 1, Carlton locked in on midfielder Paddy Dow at Pick 3 and poised midfielder Adam Cerra increasingly likely to be picked at either Pick 2 (Fremantle) or Pick 4 (North Melbourne), Collingwood appears to be the only club in the top dozen still considering Stephenson with their first selection at Pick 6.

There was a small chance that Andrew Brayshaw would fall through to Collingwood at Pick 6, but sources suggested on Thursday that he was still most likely to be picked inside the top five, meaning Collingwood’s call on Stephenson shapes as the biggest question mark on the first round of the draft.

North Melbourne is interested in both Cerra and South Australian utility Darcy Fogarty at Pick 4, along with Luke Davies-Uniacke, and are believed to rate both ahead of Brayshaw, whose father Mark is an ex-North player and board member.

The most likely scenario, however, has Cerra going to Fremantle at 2 and Dow to Carlton at 3, with Davies-Uniacke and Brayshaw rounding out the top five. The Dockers have Stephenson on their draft board, but are likely to look elsewhere inside the top five.

Stephenson’s heart condition — first detected at a routine draft screening — has prompted a risk-averse reaction from several clubs and his selection shapes as perhaps the biggest question of the draft. Some within clubs note that this condition — however potentially serious — has never been evident in his distinguished Under 18s career.

The Saints are believed to be looking seriously at running defender Nick Coffield and midfielder Hunter Clark at Picks 7 and 8, while the Western Bulldogs are favoured to select West Australian key defender Aaron Naughton at Pick 9.

In an outcome that would annoy Collingwood people, archrival Carlton is a serious chance to draft Oakleigh’s quick defender Ed Richards, the grandson of Magpie legend Ron Richards and grand nephew of Collingwood and media giant Lou Richards, at Pick 10, with Lochie O’Brien also in the mix for the Blues.

Athletic forward Aiden Bonar, who will not be picked by Carlton, is a major chance to be taken by GWS at Pick 11, assuming he is not picked by the Saints. GWS also likes Richards.

The Lions like Lachie Fogarty, a small forward, and could well choose him at Pick 15.

if stephenson is there we must take him a top 5 pick on talent available at 17 have to pull the trigger

if all these experts are right and we end up with
17 stephenson
20 brander
25 hayes
and naish
we win the draft with ease and help keep the window open long term

Could even pass on Hayes and get another mid

I hope we get three and then Naish.

Happy if one of the three is Hayes, unless we’ve taken Stephenson at 17.
Only happy to take one risk out of the three.

Would you be happy with the gamble, Paul?

Anyone else have an opinion on Stephenson at 17? Would people rather just go with Brander given the opportunity?

I really don't know, today I'm having a few doubts creep in. Last year Villis was struck out immediately, no rebuttal whatsoever, but with the AFL clearing Stephenson I'm wondering if it's pending future tests. Big risk under the circumstances. Brander I think we should take, his best football is top shelf, we just need to get some continuity to his game. At times he's a loping around like a giraffe but that could be due to mismanagement, the state coaches throw the kids around like Ken dolls. Maybe we just go Brander at 17, Sam Taylor at 20 and roll the dice on Balta at 25. I've heard some rumours about Balta being self absorbed but nothing which makes me think he's a Richard Cranium. Sometimes the juniors are coached to give the impression they are air heads so that they get to their preferred destination, Collingwood apparently circling but I wouldn't be too concerned. I just don't want Hayes, that would be a mistake. Better value with Worpel, Garner or Bailey.

If Brander is there at 17 he will be there at 20. No need to take him at 17

#17 -Stephenson , Murphy , Allen , Richards , Bonar

#20 - Brander or any of the above

#25 - Balta , Taylor , McCartin , CCJ ,Ballard , Kreuger

You're probably right and Stephenson would be tempting but it's sounding as though Sydney or West Coast will pounce.

Way too early for McCartin, Ballard & Kreuger, all are projects and I'd prefer to go with the proven footballers. CCJ is a lumbering ruck with a poor kick, big pass, can pick up a similar type with a 4th rounder. Balta at 25 makes more sense, granted he's a project but his scope is much better than the 195cm wingmen. If Allen slips then we take him, he's much more versatile than the media suggests. Murphy, hmmm, not sold, athletic yes, but is he a fancy flanker? If we're talking about a Witherden clone then McPherson is the player we target.

A fair few people rate Murphy
