Pick 12 discussion.

True - Flossy & Lennon. Not true on Conca though. That only leaked when he became a last minute invite to the Draft.

All will be reaveled on Thursday night. Ellis is ver similar to Flossy and Conca in that they are plug and play mids. We need the outside speed and Gartlett is that.

As far as I know there is no one in this draft named Gartlett. Might be good if there was though because then we could play him in the team with Griggs, Hampton, Delidio and compare him to a past player like Pattinson. Lucky we didn't get Trengrove.

If Leysy was a betting man, he'd be backing Ellis unfortunately.

Usually when the jungle drums beat about our first pick in the days leading up to the draft they are correct.

People were upset about Vlastuin too remember.
He'll have his breakout year.

Thinking the same. seems we get fixated on the player we've been monitoring and disregard the other top talent. It happened with Conca when Frank followed him for a few years.

Yeah but he didn't get fixated on a lesser player when we chose Riewoldt, Cotchin, Vickery, Martin, Ellis, Vlastuin, and Lennon.

Whoever the recruiting team picks, it would've been thorough and professional. Everything about this club screams professional these days, there's no longer a reason to assume incompetence with the current people at the club. My only fear is whether they can identify elite talent later in the draft. Pick 12 is as guaranteed as we can get with 100s of hours of research put into the decision.

If Weller, Cockatoo or Duggan is available I would be shattered to get Ellis

Seriously after the shellacking from Port Hardwick said "I know what we need" I took that to mean pace.

I liked vlas very much. Saw him and wines as similar types. Wines well ahead atm but vlas still shows signs he will bea a great at player. Don't see the signs in Ellis tho. As others say he is the conca mould.

Richardson has said quite openly that they have their eye on 3 or 4 players for pick 12. Where Ellis is ranked on that list remains to be seen.
Besides Ellis could end up being the best player in the draft for all we know.
Yep good point. Well IF that's the case they should have Ellis as 4 th pick backup if other 3 are gone. If this doesn't happen and they pick Ellis before say welled laverde Duggan etc then u can say the blinkers were indeed on.

We do have more than 1 pick. I'd say we go spanked in the middle against Port. That's just as big an issue as speed. We need both. Need to evaluate the draft as a whole. Not one pick.

The only way I can see us not taking Ellis is if Duggan is still available. He was considered a lock just a few weeks ago and the Ellis talk really only ramped up when it looked like GWS or GC would take him. Twomey has GC over-looking him for Wright and you'd think West Coast would be a reasonable chance to choose Laverde over him.

Not sure GC would go Wright.

Then again, not sure they would go Duggan seeing as they picked up Malceski, though he could be the long-term replacement (Malceski signed up for 3 years though).

Similar types.

Gut feel at this stage is the Laverde, Ahern, Duggan and Wright will all be off the table by 12, leaving us to decide between Weller and Ellis, and I reckon we'll choose Ellis.

As tigs said our later picks will really define how we've gone in this draft. If we get Ellis at 12, Miller at 33 and Gore at 52 we'll be laughing IMO. Miller probably the least likely of those but here's hoping.

In that scenario I really hope we get Weller

Wasn't Pendlebury rated in the 20's by most and when Collingwood grabbed him at 5, Greg Miller laughed at them?

Yeah something like that, or he was laughing at them taking a basketball player so early. All the while he went cold on Mitch Clark at pick 8 because of some YouTube highlights of JON.

I do too. Paige Cardona thinks he'll end up at Essendon, in which case I may throw up violently.

Stylo said:
How do you know all other clubs don't? I've heard Adelaide, North, Essendon and Carlton all love Ellis.

Those clubs can have him
We need pace, skill & someone who takes the game with run and carry. Ellis has none of those qualities for our 1st pick
If we pick Ellis we have learnt nothing from the games we lost

If the Dons get Weller & Garlett I'll spew up.

Ellis has skill, ball winning ability and composure in traffic.

Hes a plodder we have enough of them we need pace and X factor. Ellis gets the ball and dishes it off first opportunity, doesnt take the game on with run and carry also his disposal efficiency is lower than 50%.
Hardwick gets all excited when he talks about Wingard. Well heres our chance to take a player in the draft (Weller, Laverde, Ahern, Cockatoo, Garlett...) and we settle for Ellis who at best is a second rounder :brickwall
