Opposition discussion

GWS got run over this year. Last season they played 60 minutes of football against the looming premier for one goal each. In a Preliminary Final.

Maybe they're soft. Maybe the coach is soft. (I like the coach.) Maybe they're slow and old. It was good that JWK was able to get on screen when his opponent was tapping it in. Again. Did Tom Green chase anybody ever? How much did it hurt them to lose Coniglio, who sometimes runs? Can they afford to lose a runner like Callan Ward?

GWS parlayed what they had into ongoing above averageness. And now they're old and the young ones are slow.

I like Kinglsey. I'm spewing that Dogwick cost us Kingsley. He'd be smart to get out of there. Could the planets align?

Dyson Heppell to play at Port Melbourne next year as a playing assistant coach next year under Hird.

Multiple clubs tried to get him in a coaching role.

There were, and maybe still are, a lot of people who defended the average M.Clarke.

"Jake Waterman has cashed in on a breakout season, earning close to $1m a season over the next five years after re-structuring his deal at West Coast."

Waiting for @Dyer'ere 's call here on ole mate potatoes ! :ROFLMAO:

we say this most years about the premiers (not in 2022)

, and depending on whether or not Brisbane hire Dane Swan and Dustin Martin as specialist off-season Las Vegas consultants,

to build on their successful 2024 preparation

they will be hard to beat next year.

Kid Coleman and Levi Ashcroft two big ins?

will Ashcroft, kai Lohmann, Logan Morris, Jaspa Fletcher approaching 50 games

a dozen games on The Gabba, which ive been going to for 30 years, but only just realised its essentially SCG sized.

Lachie Jones is kind of a #4 back. He plays on talls and smalls and defends okay. But he doesn't flog them, and can't work over stars. He doesn't get much ball. He is very clean with the ball when he can get it. And maybe he can improve but he's been getting roughly the same numbers for years. Not enough numbers. Jones goes okay against talls because he can work the angles and use his massive girth to outposition them. He can't jump.

Harry Perryman is an elite defensive aerialist. Note - he cannot play as tall as Jones can. Perryman can't jump. But he is strong. He's slow but works angles. His skills are Scanlan's. And he is super active. Gets numbers. If he pushes forward he can catch and simply will kick the goal. It is inevitable. When back he can and will spoil. He can and will tackle. Nobody gets tackles and spoils. Perryman does. Gets numbers every season.

Port had to get Perryman. They're missing out on Going too. They should up their offers. Who else are they paying?

We are certainly all thinking the Baners can be a force next year, eZ. And beyond. They look great.

Regularly top four but not premiership material for years until they added IMO their best player Ashcroft. And Kai Lomann is a little gun. A lock top 4 side adds a best player and a new gun forward and it's the Premier.

And sure, Zorko and Neale will taper and maybe fall over soon but they are sound and explosive right now.

Word on the street is that the Bears might be adding a new best player for next year. Even better than Marcus Ashcroft. And Marshall looks pretty good to me. Only Daniher is of a certain age and making that kind of noise. Morris is not that type but he can play.

Even when Neale and Zorko retire the Bears may improve with their new best player and Marshall taking over. Their stocks are terrific.

The Bears have recruited well over all but a big element of their success in 2024 is one father son. And their ongoing premiership success will be based on another. And maybe an academy player.

43yo Zorko and 39yo Neale are playing like they are 25. If you can keep your geriatrics fresh and explosive you prolong your generation overlap. If the gerries keep going the Baners will be *smile* hard to beat.

you only really missed one thing in that otherwise comprehensive analysis;

Eric Hipwoods Las Vegas flight luggage allowance.

if they spring for 40 kg, they might as well engrave the cup now.

Andrew Bassalt. Geez this sounds so loserish from a team that would have folded years ago if not propped up financially.

The socialist/capitalist construct we have is weird.

We want to incentivise clubs to develop the game - but we do it with massive draft incentives that then get abused.

We want to have rusted on fans, and members - father-son is one way to do this. Again there are massive draft incentives. Personally this one I don't mind and its a bit of a tatslotto spin as to what you get.

We want clubs to stand on their own two feet - but we have minimum player payments and maximum player payments, soft caps on coaching and a murky leadership body that seems to able dish out favors and punishments w/o scrutiny. (AFLW for richmond - no, extra draft picks for north - yes, stand rule for geelong - yes)
What do you get left to compete on? -- having a biased crowd, having better faciilities, being more attractive culturally to certain types of players, having better political connections to the media and the AFL HQ, having better personnel that get paid the same as personnel at other clubs... ?

We want an 18 team competition to support the media deal but clearly some clubs are non stand alone viable. (Have we ever seen a cost / benefit comparison of 16 vs 18...?) This then compromises them to have a voice (unless they are AFL sponsored).

I'm glad they have called it out despite being propped up financially. I'd separate the two things despite it seeming disengenuous I see them as separate issues. No doubt the AFL media will paint them as whingers, just like the Tiges had happen to them when we pointed out the umpiring was crap and also had Rance and Grimes pilloried by all and sundry for staging - which hasn't hapenned to a bunch of stagers since.

They need a shitload of players, IMO, td. A couple of HBF for nothing would be a great start.

FWIW Scanlan's Perryman is a toff around goal. And can defend. Going breaks lines. And can defend.

As for small forwards, one? If they can bring in ten they'd be very smart. Five would be a good start. Pressure forwards all over the park. It's a shame the small forwards they have don't apply enough pressure but that's the coach.

GWS got Toby Bedford for nothing. A small forward. Naturally, he plays midfield for a good coach. Port would profit from a Bedford immensely. Three would level them up.

They need at least one strike midfielder to level up IMO. Not a slow. A runner. And a tall forward has to be in the budget.
