NRL

RLW out today - not too much innit tho as expected.

Also out NRL guide with all players etc.

Got both mine today and will settle down quietlt with both tonight.

Ahhhh ...... the seasons just around the corner ....................... BRING IT ON!!

I just got back from a great time in Sydney and travelled up the northern suburbs and kept wondering why the Bears ended?

Why did teams merge? (I miss my Balmain Tigers)

Bennet and Steve Kearny are the Bulldogs prime targets for Folkesys spot next year.

The new directors want Bennett.

Looks like ol Folkesy will be getting the lemon and sarse at seasons end.

Sad end it will be for a Club great and lifelong servant of the Canterbury Bankstown Club

No one lasts forever even the great Turvey Mortimer and the Hughes Boys parted with the club.

A new board will hopefully bring an end to all the rot down there.

Removing trouble making mercenary players such as Mason, Maitua, Tonga , Roberts and Utai will also help no end as these players have become in their own minds bigger than the club and should be replaced with more level headed types.

Were losing money, and then got @$#@^$@^& over by Manly and the NRL commission who seemigly had no issues with sending great foundation clubs such as Norths, Wests, Balmain, Souths to the wall.

Rugby League doesnt generate the sort of $$ AFL does, its crowds are tiny, and the lack of income and money along with rising costs, etc sent clubs broke. Blockbuster NRL games are lucky to get 20,000 attendees.

NRL has definately become a TV game imo.

Had NRL clubs had memebership schemes like AFL clubs back then instead of just leagues club memberships i think these clubs wouldve obviously done better.

NRL clubs are now turning to AFL style supporter membership with more gusto, for instance Canterbury want 10,000 members byt 2010 or something like that i cant remember, which is funny to AFL fans.

A club such as Canterbury could easily have 30,000 members but the history of NRL club membership has been a bit different.

I was gonna sign up as a member for the North Sydney Bears leagues club for the grand ol price of $15 or something like that.

Our NSW PRErs will better explain things no doubt cos i may be way off the mark.

Ahh the ol days of watching the likes of

Billy Moore, Mark Graham, Les Kiss, Jason Taylor, Greg Florimo, Gazza Larsson, Kerry Boustead, in Norths jerseys and Blocker Roach, Junior Pearce, Ben Elias, Gary Jack, Paul Sironen etc in the Mighty Balmain Tigers jersey.

Sometimes i wish those days were now.

Don't we all craigy.

Garry Jack and Benny Elias were my favs as a kid.

I'll never forget that 'orangey' Balmain jersey :hihi

As Craig mentioned Doggies chasing Wayne Bennett & if they don't get him they will chase Steve Kearney.Seems Folkes is a dead man walking.

Balmain & St George were more financially stable & viable than Souths but were 'spooked' / seduced by the ARL to merge .

I'm no lover of the Rabbits but admire & appreciate what George Piggins did for his club in standing up to the ARL & News .

If only someone at Balmain & St George had an ounce of Piggins fortitude then both & perhaps other such supposedly endangered clubs would have kept their standalone status in the top tier.

Still burns me that the Sydney/NSW 'Super League' clubs gave up nothing/little upon the reunification of the code , yet they lead to clamour to return because they were bleeding at the gates .The fans wanted to see clashes between traditional teams , which was happening in the ARL but not in Super League.

If mergers had to occur then it should have involved clubs on both sides of the divide , not just one & not the other.

Well said Jubey and a knowledgeable response from one in a better position to explain these vagueries.

Geez i remember getting a bit excited when Elias was leading the cgarge to return Balmain to their own right , sadly didnt happen.

To this day i cant see how two clubs with intense rivalry such as Western Suburbs and Balmain could become one.

Cant remember the year it happened after superleague but i remember the ARL comp comprising

Brisbane Broncos

Canterbury Bankstown

Canberra Raiders

Illawarra Steelers

St George Dragons

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles

Cronulla Sutherland Sharks

Penrith Panthers

Parramatta Eels

Newcastle Knights

Nth Queensland Cowboys

South Qld Crushers

Noth Sydney Bears

South Sydney Bunnies

Balmain Tigers

Eastern Suburbs Magpies

Western Suburbs

18 team comp unless ive forgotten someone.

That was a good time in ARL however as Jubey stated the return of Brisbane, Canberra, Canterbury, Cronulla etc from superleague had damaged the game forever.

Rupert Murdoch %$#%$####% Rugby League and aided in the loss of these great proud traditional clubs.

I even miss the ol style League jerseys with their 3/4 cut length sleeves and collars, always good as they were fairly heavy and warm hence obviously why they have been replaced with *smile* t shirts and rash vests which imo look *smile*.

Some say thats progress i guess, but i prefer the golden days and the characters that were larger than life.

OK enough reminiscing and wanting for the past time to get back with the now, and for all my sooking about the golden years im looking foward to a huge NRL season kicking off in the next few weeks.

Early tip for improvers go to the Roosters with a formidable pack including the likes of Mason, OMeley, Myles, Shillington, Fitzgibbon Nutley and Paea, with strike power in the backs from Tupou, Roberts and Minnichiello.

I think Anasta will be more comfortable surrounded by ex Dogs and a bigger stronger pack also and play better footy at 5/8.

AGree Criaig,Anything short of a top 8 finish would be considered an ordinary year for the Roosters.

Easts Magpies ?? (typo Craigy?)

OK latest rumor in NRL.

Craig Gower to break contract in France and return to NRL to play for ...............................................................

Canterbury !!!

This could get very ugly between Canterbury and the Panthers as the Panthers released Gower on terms to go to FRance and not to a rival NRL club.

Watch this space.

Noad has fallen on his sword and resigned.

The cleanout of Belmore has started.

A few more players will go this year as most likely will the coach with the new board ................... maybe just maybe the worm will turn at Belmore.

Correct, havent seen it though so cant say whether there was anything untoward or not, maybe nsw or qld tiges may be able to shed more on it.

Souths ploy to get Craig Wing back obviously rested on him being offered the coveted #7 jersey which Wing could never obtain at the Roosters.

Personally i dont know how good Wing would be as a halfback but we will soon see.
