Noah Balta - Welcome to Tigerland

Completely clueless as often, Loveless. But you keep drifting in like a lingering odour.

Back on Noah Balta there are some players you can watch and just go “ oooh look at that” . He is one.

If he wants to put in the work to be as good as he can be he will be pretty special imo.

There must be some question marks for him to go mid 20s but I am not sure what they are. I just hope he knows he has to work hard

:) Coming from anyone's mouth but Leon that might be a valid interpretation.

With you hanging around, Loveless, undoubtedly the pie would stink. Because undoubtedly you would have stuck your nose into it. Talk about an old, moralising sticky-beak.

Personally thought his first season was quite impressive. I loved his confidence and aggression, he showed no fear of any opponent from what I saw, and really attacked the contest and demonstrated real versatility. I was calling for his debut, but didn't realise how young he still was (turned 19 in Oct). Still believe he would have handled a call-up.

But not sure where the doubts are coming from. Are there claims or evidence he's not prepared to put the effort in? I have no problem if a young guy doesn't live and breathe the game 24/7; think having the game in perspective is healthy in the long run. But once he crossed that line, he looked switched on.

Very appropriate. Spell Leon backwards.
Tis the season to be jolly

Only in France. [BTW, been meaning to ask, so with no apostrophe, does it rhyme with Bont, as in Dont Argue?]

I was just musing over why a guy with this level of ability went at 25 or so.

The only thing I have heard about that is that he is a bit laconic about footy but I haven’t seen it on the field as you have noted as well.

I think he is a great talent

Another player who developed a bad rep through the interview process. Rumours that he was too self absorbed to the point of arrogance. Then there was the coaching at state level, basically played out of position, or at least played in roles he had little clue about. Every recruiter in Australia would have seen Brander rip him apart in the Metro vs Allies game, I can just imagine most would have written him off based on that performance alone.

As I’ve said to you before Bully, there had to be something to put the recruiters off him as there’s no way the football and athletic talent he has slips to 25 without a reason. No doubt I’m a tad biased , however from what I saw off him in a lot of games last year his ceiling is higher then most top 10 KPP drafted in the past 10 years.

Like the ones who can't get beyond two syllable words but have mastered some really complex abbreviations? Yer, move on Loveless.

One thing I keep hearing about is that the combine doesn't matter, it's the interview process that counts for everything. Whilst it can be a good guide, especially when sizing up players who might move interstate, it can be the cause of some horrible miscalculations. Balta should have gone much higher, you only had to look at his form in the All-Stars game to realise the enormous potential. But I mentioned in the draft thread that teenagers have a tendency to say the wrong things, some simply haven't been exposed to any type of interview in their lives. Some get good coaching like those at the AIS, some get nothing, particularly players who come from the country or outback communities. There's some good interviews with Maurice Jnr on the web which gives you some idea of what I'm talking about. Fortunately for him he'll get some experience due to his famous name.

For those interested I just posted a 4 minute interview with MJR up in the Junior Footballers section under the Maurice JNR thread

Jack Higgins is a great example

I remember you are i were involved in a thread the year prior to Higgins getting drafted where it was mentioned that he had limited upside and was not too good with interviewing and we both made seperate posts on how we would be very happy if he slipped to our #17 selection in that year.

I watch how they play whilst they have the ball and what they do when the ball is not in their area, Provided they are not total head cases and their athletic traits are upto it then ill take the footballer higgins over a polished performer in interviews every day.

Dusty probably would never have been drafted on his pre draft interviews

He probably just grunted ! I recall seeing a very young Dusty at a club function years ago and he couldn’t look people in the eye really. He wasn’t rude, he just didn’t really know how to engage and was quite shy.

Some good points made about interviews, these kids are 18 !!
