Nick Vlastuin

I don't think it was wrong to appoint Cotchin captain. Where I think we get it wrong now is we don't move it around often enough these days.

In our heyday from 1967 to 1982 we had 9 captains in 16 years which works out at less than 2 years tenure on average. I would be happy to revert to this policy. It takes the burden off one player, it shares the experience around and gives a lot more players an understanding and desire to lift the rest of the team. I would have no problem if next year, Riewoldt, Rance, Maric, Jackson or even Delidio or Martin were named Captain for one or maybe two years . Beyond that Ellis, Vlaustin, Miles could also be candidates subject to form and fitness.

How do you look into the future as to how a player will respond to being given captaincy? How could you tell? It wasn't a left field decision. Every supporter knew Cotch would be captain one day. Trent said he was ready, Newy was well over the hill.

Had the club picked someone else I bet everyone complaining Cotch being made skipper would be bemoaning right now that Trent should be captain. We all wanted Cotch to be captain at the time, but all the hindsight geniuses come out now and act like they knew better at the time.

It wasn't a wrong choice.

Agreed, at the time it looked reasonable, hindsight is 20/20.

Agreed. Ahh hindsight is a wonderful thing, everyone becomes a genius with it.

A good proportion of the opinions posted on this site are based on it!

Promoting Cotchin to Captain was the worst idea out of Richmond in a long time. Doing it again to Nick would be criminal.

Prob for it's own thread but out of curiosity who would you have chosen instead of Cotchin at the time?

why has he been left out? Injured? happy Heilbg gets a go but Vlastuin should be playing unless injured!!!

Helbig will be happy too, it's O'Hanlon who is playing ;D

happy with that also, what pick was O'Hanlon, a top 20 i think, need to play these fringe players in their positions, their fringe for a reason they can develop later if they give enough to get the chance

He was picked as a bit of a speculation in the PSD, similar to the way we picked up Grimes.

I'm a big fan , just a little disappointed he hasn't improved more this year in fact his stats have dropped a tad this year the broken finger he had might have impaired him for a few weeks .
