I have no envey for NV at the moment, like the lad but his not playing real well atm imo

Agree. 1 game as a mid then gets switched to the backline again and then his direct opponent nearly wins the game off his own boot?
Nick is under heavy scrutiny..

Were you at the game ToO? He wasn't on WHE all the time and two of WHE goals in the last were no fault of Vlastuin's. I agree though he will be feeling the heat a bit with some of the other youngsters vying for possies.

only just going.

such a poor return we have from the 2010 to 2014 draft first rounders...Conca, B Ellis, Vlastuin, Lennon, C Ellis. They are not all busts, but this is basically a hopeless return from 5 goes.

Put dusty at the start and Danny boy on the other end and it helps.

But we really need our two first rounders at the end of this season to be rippers!

Still hope that Flossy can go up a couple of notches, and hope without reason that Cellis will be a decent AFL player!

I thought Flossy was ok against the Bears. He's good with the ball. (I don't like to see him laying it off at forty-five. We want him to kick aggressively.) He got some genuine clearances. Ran. And he was ok up forward. He got to bat higher than usual due to Martin's midfield absences. Good exposure and opportunity.

Nick's not setting the world on fire but I think he's a pass at this stage.

FWIW I don't think he's encouraged to carve it up on the chase like he did in the second half against Carlton. He's one of many learning the art of winning the ball. Three to five tackles is fine for him and three clearances good. But eleven disposals is not enough. So far he's 11, 12, 10, 11.

To make a midfielder Nick Vlastuin has to get more ball. Just trending up is the next step.

Vlastuin wears number one. He is the next Chris Newman. He's a solid defensive half player who might not be a midfielder and whose man can snag a few. He might captain the club, and Ian4 could very well grow to hate him.

It all depends on how he uses the ball. Newman was a conservative user, especially for one with such a penetrative boot. Flossy can't kick as far as Newman but he can be as accurate. You'd think the new game plan would encourage him to be more aggressive.

he did some ripper things.

midfielder type things. he hunted the ball and barged free of the pack a few times.

put a smile on my face.

Agree. I've given up on him becoming a midfielder, he is what is. Solid role player who doesn't make me panic when he gets the ball.

Would like to see him get 16-22 touches a week more often but it's not going to happen.

Nick is the mr almost on a weekly basis.

Almost got enough disposals, almost did enough influential things, almost had a good game.

I've now accepted that's just who he is as a player. But he's better than anyone not in the team and a good role player.

On the face of it I'd say Nick Vlastuin and Ben Lennon have nothing in common. But it occurred to me that there is one thing.

Each has been given an extended chance and come up short. (Lennon much shorter.) And because the chance afforded has been generous there can be no doubt about the results.

The information is conclusive and freely available. It's consistent over time. Inescapably true.

There is no delusion to shroud their shame. They are prominently naked. Everybody knows. And because they know they're free.

Nick Vlastuin is on the brink of exactly and ever average. (He has more gifts than Lennon.)

We're about to find out what Nick Vlastuin is really made of. Will he go gentle into that mediocre night? The matter is urgent. Nick Vlastuin is free.

I still put Vlaustin in the Glenn Archer mold. Archer averaged 13 disposals over his career. His career best was 16 a game in 2005.
If you told me we'd draft a player like Archer, I'd be quite happy.
If you told me we'd use a first round pick for him, I'd be less so.

We certainly had a run of "average footballer" types. Conca, B Ellis, Vlaustin, Lennon, C Ellis. I wonder if Frank had a "type"?

I know what your saying TG, however I'd give up the number 1 pick if we were going to get G Archer , no Archer no flags for North, the rare players like Archer lift every player they play with. Really like the Vlaustin, however his no Archer, infact there's only been one.

I'm coming more from a toughness point of view CC. I agree, I don't think there's a spiritual leader in the league like Archer.

Hodge is probably the closest, but I still think he's a bit short.

They can't all be ball magnets, he does his job, goes in hard and doesn't often waste it, how well does his man play?

I don't think he gets beaten that often.
