Note: even the wooden-spooner beat RFC by near 50 CLRs (797/749). But it's just the ruckman to blame.
Lets compare Hampson with the bottom two sides' ruckman seeing as you brought this up:

Stefan Martin - 71 clearances
Matthew Leuenberger - 51 clearances
Shaun Hampson - 28 clearances

All played 20 games so the comparison is fair between the three. We need much better from our ruckman.

If you look more closely, you might notice that Martin(+41) greatly improved his CLRs numbers over 2016, Cotch(+12) and even Edwards(+23) marginally, whereas Miles fell away(-43) counter-balancing Dusty. So, by your analysis, Dusty greatly improved with Hammer and Shed/Cotch also to an extent; Miles the opposite. Who would you rather have the ball in their hands, Bill? Ellis and Grigg fell away somewhat too. Interesting.

im not a fan of Hampson, but those make it obvious he is about quality of clearance rather than quantity. he is clearly directing his taps to the guys we want to have the ball, and the guys the opposition are trying to stop getting it.

Unless our game plan was second to the ball, in which case he kept missing

Martin's midfield numbers all went up because he spent about 90% of his time there this season instead of previously being played outside the contest with extended stints up forward. Not because of Hampson :rofl

so its Martin's fault our clearance numbers went down?

Comprehension?

Martin's numbers went up with way more TOG in the centre square and would go up even more so with a competent ruckman. Still Hampson's fault.

Hampson involved in clearances=clearances down= Hampsons fault.
Martin involved in clearance= clearances down= Hampsons fault.

i get how it works.

Knackers will be a beauty...sort of reminds me of a cross between Troy Simmonds, Benny Gale and Maric

That's logical to some, Brodders.

Martin is certainly one of the best ruck-midfielder types, maybe THE best. His clearances are impressive but he usually loses on HOs given he's just 198cm. So Hammer did him for these 652/558. So it's a matter of preference. I don't think Hampson could do much more than handball it if he gained a ground-ball anyway. But the problem with a Martin type is that when you really need a HO desperately for an urgent clearance - say 2 pts down with a minute to go - he is unlikely to get it. Otherwise, he's very good value.

Leunberger I'm not even going to look up; just a standard ruck IMO.

Based on Bill's table this does not figure.

Morning Leon, wouldn't a comparison of the two top ranked teams ruckmen be a better comparison?

The club took your advice, Lamby. (Not mine).

Think as you said he has been our best option which is really an indictment on BH, i think anyone with 2 eyes and a nose can attest the the hammer is off. The sooner RFC are in a position that he never plays again the stronger we become.

Think Nanny will overtake Shuan in 2017 and i forget the nightmare quickly.

No, because I have never claimed H is anywhere near elite, just the best we have once Eevan started to struggle with the toll on his body. If you're referring to Gawn, well he's rapidly grasping for the mantle of No.1 IMO; and Goldstein, he is perhaps not quite what he once was. From vague memory, Hampson was competitive against Goldy, can't recall Melbourne match now but expect Gawn too good.*

Nankervis has a long way to go to get anywhere near the ruck elite too. I'm very keen on the kid too, but just arguing to allow him time to step up. Too often keen posters on PRE pump up a new guy's tyres only to savagely deflate them about 6-10 rounds in.

*Edit: no wonder I didn't remember. Hampson missed Dees debacle injured. Maric played. You can guess the rest. Probably finished Ivan for 2016 .. at least.

All to unfold in 2017.

Hasnt Maric gone down hill very quickly, You would think he is 34/35 but he will turn 31 in januuary compared to Sandilands 34

Richmond broke him, ran him into the ground when he wasn't fit.

That would mean he comes back better than last year and back to his usual best considering he was rested last year and didnt have a massive workload
