Most underrated player to wear yellow and black

1. Here's a question, underrated in what way?

2. But he was also a deeply flawed footballer.

1. In the underrated way - which is the gap between the contribution, and the level of respect and acknowledgment of that contribution.

Dimma told dylan buckley 'he was probably the greatest role player in rfc history'

Thats no small statement. Its a long history and a lot of roles.

2. Flaws were the foundation on which our dynasty was built, and which changed the orbit of the entire world.

Remember George lasted longer than any other of our small forwards that basically were told to sprint everywhere all match except where the ball is going.

Yes. For Three-Premierships long.

The notion of 36 game 1 flag Towner being equaly underrated as 134 game 3 flag George

is unfathomable to me.

But i dont fathom much these days

Edwards.

He darted out of the centre square in Sydney once and, sensing he was under too much pressure from a gang of Swans at both shoulders, he flipped a right hand handball backwards over his right shoulder into the path of a teammate coming off the point of the right flank into wide open space. Genius. Easily the cleverest thing that happened all day.

The call went something like ‘the ball squirts out to Lambert (or whoever it was) in space…’

Non Richmond supporters seemed incapable of seeing him. He was our very own Mr. Snuffleupagus.

Sometimes I wondered if our collective subconscious fabricated Shane to explain lucky bounces.

Underrated and literally unseen.
I’m struggling to remember what game it was on but I recall it was a very big game, maybe a final.
I was sitting on the southern wing, AFL members. The ball was kicked to a pack of players and Edwards plucked the spillage at full pace and in an instant he was gone. Because my line of site was directly to where he did that and the goals at the city end I saw perfectly what happened next. At full speed he kicked the ball slightly off centre perfectly into the path of a running Lambert who goaled. Genius. On TV it was nowhere near as impressive as live.
Remember that little kick off the ground to a running Caddy in a Dreamtime game ? Awesome. Only a handful of players could do the stuff he did.

Richo was one of our best ever players, but was underrated by non Richmond supporters.
Lots of footy fans just remember the odd dummy spit and the missed goals but his record stands up to most in that era.
800 goals but he didn’t kick them sitting in a goal square, his work rate was massive.
He is underrated but I think he holds one title that probably means more to him than any other. To me he is the most loved player by the Tiger supporters that I have seen in my lifetime. He had this unique status of being a superstar player and one of us at the same time.
I’m still sad we never got to see him play in a farewell game.

I read his book recently, a terrific insight into the Great Man. He bled Yellow and Black, he really was/is one of us. I vividly remember the images of him weeping with joy in 2017 when we won the Flag.

As far as being underrated is concerned, he may have been by opposition supporters but, he definitely wasn't by opposition players & clubs.

I have quite a few demented takes, but me believing he would have been the greatest player of all time ahead of Dusty... I mean Carey :ROFLMAO: if he had played for a better side isn't one of them.

He had it all. Imagine what could have been if he had help, a rich club with all the facilities and coaches, staff etc.

But he was ours.

Here's a question, underrated in what way?

Importance? Nobody's doubting it.

Chaos? Best in the game.

Culture/Richmond man? Must be elite due to popularity.

But he was also a deeply flawed footballer.

I reckon his early retirement was due to a lot of things. Partly social media and people going too far. Partly injuries. But I'd say it's also partly that the writing was on the wall with a changing game demanding more footskills and composure and he knew he'd either end up a second tier player, or a journeyman, neither of which is befitting a 3 time premiership star.
Castagna and "chaos" is what comes to mind first, but 2017 peak George took a lot of marks too. Rioli got reinvented as a half back and Butler lost form and ended up in the VFL before the saints picked him up. What a trio. Chuck in Caddy and Towner. Great fwd line.

Goal kicking accuracy never improved and the 2019 GF, lucky for us it was a flogging.

I caught the Suns loss in 22. George's goal kicking technique was a joke.. 0 2 and a few out on the full. ...MRJ and Cumbo played well that game. IMO we should have reinvented JC as some other position .

Dimma/Mini had players who play roles...with dramatically declining success. Gunna be fascinating watching a new game plan. Will Steely Green get a gig on the back of a practice match?

2019 Prelim v Geelong we are down 21 points at half-time.

George kicks 2 critical goals. Takes the 2nd most marks inside 50 on the ground behind Lynch.

Flawed - yes. But always good when we needed him most.

Reckon you're thinking of the 2017 prelim v GWS. Shedda roved it, jinked one way, cut back the other, breaking four ankles in the process, then lace-out. His rove off the pack and vision to spot Lambo in the clear for a goal at the start of the last quarter in the 2019 prelim was brilliant and decisive as well. The man was a genius.

I have attached it. First goal of the last qtr. Sublime. Maybe that is what Sin is referring to?

Goosebumps thinking about these heroes. I miss that football.

Yeah, you're right. That's the second one I mentioned but reckon it's the one Sin meant.

The first one I mentioned was either the 2017 prelim or 2019 grand final.

In the 2019 prelim, the most under rated piece of play, and I'm still confused as to how it doesn't get more kudos, is the Riewoldt tap to Martin.

I’m not sure it was that game Spook because I wasn’t there. I was back for the grannie but missed that game.

The one i am referring to was roving at top speed and kicking at top speed, no jinking. There were too many of them

Found it on an Edwards highlight reel. It was against Geelong in 2019 but not sure what game.

And NONE of the commentators even mentioned Riewoldt's genius tap to Dusty. "The Geelong defenders let get out the back". Says it all really.
Brain dead most of them.

I've said it many times over the years, Jack is one of the smartest player to ever play the game.

a piece of brillance
V GWS at Sydney Showgrounds
rained all game , very wet
Jack leads out to the half forward and traps the ball right on the boundary with his feet
defender right on his hammer , Jack with plenty of body work keeps the ball on the ground and get goal side
backs into the defender hard , this gives him just enough time to pick up and kick off 1 step
he skids it thru for a goal from 30 out on a day when few showed any skills

the small crowd was mainly Tigers fans and yes they cheered a goal
but I don't think many realised they witnessed a piece of football wizardry
