List Management 2023

The scarcity of talls ensures he will probably stay in the system another year or two, probably a cut above VFL, good running capacity and can hit the scoreboard averaging 1.1 goals a game. He's not the answer to anything from a Richmond perspective, tracking similar to Shaun McKernen who limped his way to 91 games. Tough gig this key forward business, even finding one can cause headaches. Plenty of clubs like the Doggies in the early 2000s and Freo more recently have spent outrageous amounts of draft capital finding answers. In some ways we are now entering unchartered waters, there's always been one on the list, even during the dark times. I'd even set the bar at something resembling Jeff Hogg, a safe 2 goal forward, doable but the club needs some picks in the 6-15 range.
He's not a key forward. Nor key back. Nor ruck.

Shaun McKernan at least was competitive at times.

Schache would be the limpest big man I can recall. Far worse than the likes of Vickery. Obviously he was a high draft pick which makes for harsher judgement.

McBean was better than Schache.

He's somewhere between Vickery & McBean, but I wonder at 26 whether someone will take the punt, talls tend to linger longer.

Schache v Cleve Hughes would be an interesting debate
That's stretching it, Schache has kicked 79 career goals, 2019 was an ok year, Cleve had one good game, classic full forward craft in that Dunstall style but never to be seen again.

Yeah but could Schache ever pull off catalogue face like Clever?

I wouldn't hold my breath. Doubt he would want to leave and if he did clubs wouldn't give up anything more than a late first rounder at best IMO.
Agree. At 32yo unlikely to get better than a late 1st rounder for Dusty. And it would likely be a team in the premiership window. Only team in that area with a high draft pick is the Demons with pick #5. He's not going anywhere. A Tiger for life imo.

would the "simple" plan be to trade players for picks; ie: Cumberland for a third rounder. (to any club) Ralph-Smith for a third rounder. (to any club). Dow for a third rounder. (to any club). then bundle those picks up and send them to Gold Coast for their first round pick?
edit: Norths third rounder is currently worth 446 points (?Dow). Sydneys third rounder is currently worth 412 points (?Cumberland). West Coast third rounder is currently worth 465 points (?Ralph-Smith). Not sure it gives Suns enough points to cover all their Academy players- so might have to throw in our third rounder too (362 points) to get their first round pick.
again- ideas only.
How would this be possible? Cotch, Reiwoldt, Tarrant, Castagna, possibly Pickett. Trade out Dow, Cumbo, Ralphsmith (2 uncontracted) but give 3 picks to GC. Where do we get more draft picks to replace all these players (assuming we keep the rest of the deadwood such as Colina)? Pick 4 isn't going to happen. Our possible offering is too weak and we don't have enough draft picks as it is to be giving them away. A team like Sydney are in a far better position to get something done with current picks 12,22,31,41,50,86.

i am not sure on any of this. But i was under the impression that the club has to lodge lists at a certain time before the Drafts and from there- clubs are allocated extra junk round picks; to ensure they have enough options for the National and Pre-season drafts. and if a club passes on any allocated selections; they can use the SSD signing period (not sure of the correct names) to ensure they can get their list up to the required amount of players- including main list and rookies and category b rookies. Not sure if someone else could shine a better more informed light on it please to assist my understanding. But the point I was trying to make was more about how we can get enough points by trading fringe players with some currency- to try and get the Gold Coast first round pic. (*and they might throw back to us their 60,65 & 68 which have 0 points currency towards their academy players)... so yeah; ie: Norths 3rd rounder for 446 points . Sydneys third rounder for 412 points. West Coast's third rounder: 465 points or our third rounder= currently at 362 points. Not sure it gives Suns enough points to cover all their Academy players. Suns dont need players this year; as many have pointed out- they just need later multiple pics worth enough points for their 3 academy players who will be bid on in the top 15.. those 2 uncontracted players can be traded as well- if they dont agree to the trade though- they walk to the pre-season draft/or risk not getting a gig in 2024.

We have next to no trade currency. Realistically speaking we ain’t getting rid of Short, Vlastuin etc.

We need to take our medicine this year and hit the draft with what we have and hope we see natural progression with our current crop of kids.
