Re: Welcome Liam McBean at pick 33

I really dont see him as a ruckman - just doesn't look like he's got the mongrel.

He does have he opportinity of being a very good forward though.

He is actually a 203 cm rover cum goal sneak.

His kicking skills and agility are amazing for such a tall bloke. it will be interesting to see how he develops as he puts on some muscle. Like Franklin, if he gets out on a lead and puts his arms out it will be hard to stop him.

Agree again, he's your classic spare parts player who should offer some structural flexibility. But all things said and done, we still need to address our succession plan for Maric, at the moment we seem to be recruiting an awful lot of second ruckman.

If we go to 2+2 on the bench, could the traditional ruckman disappear and be replaced by 2 or 3 2nd ruckman types ? Add in the tweaking to the rucking rules and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that we're seeing the slow death of the traditional ruckman.

Interesting. Anyone know how fast he is?

Yep it's will all come down to whether or not he can thrive at the contest.

Pretty skills are for flankers.

At least Big Ivan will give him a few lessons on what is required.
I give it a week before eevan has fixed him up good and proper

Exactly my line of thinking Baloo.
Umpires throwing the ball up around the ground and no contact before the ball leaves the maggots hand brings our game restarts into similar territory to basketball tip offs.
Virtual death knell for the physical beasts, brings tall mobile athletic ruckmen straight to the front line of AFL. Should suit the Swish n Mcjellybean perfectly.

I wouldn't write off the beasts just yet, my guess is they'll adapt and thrive. Let's not forget they'll still be allowed contact, they'll just have less time to jocky for position. Boundary throw-ins still allow for a few seconds of wrestle time and ball-ups will still feature two rucks facing off. I know guys like Jolly have been a bit hot under the collar but I just don't see it as the big game changer like some are making out.

Centre bounces they aren't allowed to touch or look at their opponent.
Round the ground bounces just stand opposite your opponent, there'll be no jockeying or jostling for position.
Boundary still enables some jostling, if both rucks really want to, nothing to stop third man in, or coming from separate angles. Also more deliberate frees being given around the boundary to reduce rucking contests in this area.
The beasts might not be caged yet but they're being hunted with stun guns.

The only real differences I can see will be at stoppages within the field of play, but there's still some hangtime in which the big bulls can attempt to outbustle their opponents. Granted, they'll be facing off at each other but there will almost certainly be contact before the ball starts it's downward trajectory, it just comes down to perfecting the timing. It will give guys like Naitanui a slight edge but he's a difficult guy to nail down in any case. I'm guessing it will effect the way Shane Mumford and Darren Jolly go head to head, but they're both at an equal disadvantage as far as the rule change goes.

You are not allowed to LOOK at your opponent? What the hell is that supposed to mean!!??!

Jelly looks sweet but does he get much of the ball, especially marks?

Contested marking isn't one of his strong points but he's decent on the lead, if he can sort that out and become more physical at the contest then we'll be making headway. My big question is whether you can teach someone to be agressive and relish physical contact. Angus Graham and Dean Putt are recent examples which suggest otherwise, l certainly hope it's a case of third time lucky.

Does he get much of the ball: stats? Kick many goals? Or was he mostly played back?

Kicked 23 goals in 11 TAC games and reports say he played back a bit so he can snag a goal.

At TAC level he spent most of his time up forward and managed to kick 43 goals over the past 2 seasons, but played in defence at the u/18 carnival. His stats are reasonable for a big bloke but not so impressive if one was to focus solely on his rucking credentials.

If we're going to look on the bright side, Dean Cox was once a gangly kid who would have looked like a ten pound weakling when compared to a seasoned AFL ruckman, so there's definitely hope. I think having Maric as a mentor will also be good for McBean, he just needs a good dose of the angry pills and he'll be halfway there (they should also show him footage of Graham to highlight what not to do on the football field).

Another one who was pretty skinny when he started was the Gus Bus. Turned into a condom stuffed with walnuts.
