Any chance of a debut against the Tankers in Round 4? ;D

I'll be watching the VFL with interest this week.

Coburg eh?

As a northern boy that about seals it. It was good on those terraces while it lasted.

Yep, 2pm. Saturday. Suburban ground. Traditional. Gonna wear a duffle coat, eat a meat pie, kick the footy on the ground and listen in at the huddle. Better than any *smile* hovercraft.

yeah I dig listening to the huddles.

and hearing the players trash talkin' is fun too ;D

In true pre form. He was built up as the next best thing before he even played a game in the 1st.
Hasn't come on so now he's a spud.

What were his stats for his best game at VFL level? I know I'm going back a long way, but Mark Jackson absolutely dominated in the 2's at Richmond, kicked 100+ goals one season. He couldn't get a game due to us having Roach and Taylor. Is McBean pushing like Jacko did all those years ago?

You gotta get out of the distant past. The game has moved on. McBean/Jacko relevance. Zero.

Do you have his best stats? Jackson was kicking bags week after week and he still couldn't crack our seniors side.

I dont think there is one valid premise in your post.

1. He has performed better than one could have expected kicking more goals than anyone else last two VFL seasons, despite being a skinny developing tall.

2, His supporters still support him.

3. His detractors either always did or have fashioned their opinion on a quarter in a NAB cup game or worse are Hardwick cultists where truth only exists if it is uttered by the great one. Hardwick denies him thrice (teen) so Beanie is a dud!

Some of those points are valid Lamby but what do you reckon Tim Clarke has to say? If The Beano is doing everything that Tim Clarke expects for him to make the grade at AFL level do you reckon TC would be making a strong case to Dimma to include the bloke?

I know there were VFL coaches game reports on players occasionally circulating on PRE.

Anyway point is to lay blame for McBean's non selection at Dimma's feet only is not realistic. We'd have a selection panel for sure, like other clubs.

It is within the selection committee's right not to pick him.

It's not right to say that he hasn't performed though.

I don't think Tim Clarke has much influence at all on first team selections.

Me either.

Skilled, classy players who run forward of the ball have been studiously ignored for two seasons now.

The head coach fashions the team exactly how he wants it. For better or worse. The trade-off? Assistant coaches get second chances, unlike the boss.

Brother, I'm working but I'm in next time.

BTW I don't drink or smoke these days so I'll probably get really high. Hey, we should have a psychedelic PRE VFL experience. With the McSSiah. And a gourd would be good too.

The other night I was looking at a range hood light and I turned to my com padres and said 'That range hood light, are you getting that? Is that range hood light, is that like, you know, holy?'

And I want to look at McJeebus like that, like he's more than just a gourd, but an artefact of true holiness like a range hood light playing in the VFL. Like he's a guy with a dollar in his Nike, a guy like me.

We should definitely do this.

That's a plan, Stan. Lock it in, Eddie.

Perhaps not, but if i was senior coach I'd bevery interested in the opinion of my reserves coach when it came to whom to promote. Of course Beano has never been selected so it's easier for you to rationalise it by saying "Dimma and selection panel don't listen to Tim Clarke".

You also didn't answer the question which was what does Tim Clarke think of McBeaN and his development and deficiencies so far. You may not know the answer to this of course.

I've copied in a thread on the VFL page with a reference to Clarke saying its no use recruiting guys who dont fit the richmond (Hardwick) game plan. Below are a few snippets from Clarke on Mcbean. It appears they ride Liam very hard for some reason. Long story short no matter what he does it aint good enough.

“He gets five and we think that he’s contributing as well as he can at the moment, however we’ve got to continue working on Liam’s game because when you see young forwards that are developing, it’s a lot harder to step up and do what he does at AFL level,” Clarke said.

“I know the coaches know that he would go and kick goals playing in our AFL team, it’s just whether he could keep the ball inside 50 and compete. He’s getting better every single week with it, it’s just a matter of time until he can transfer that into AFL football.”

or

Clarke was impressed but not surprised by the return to form and five-goal haul of Liam McBean, who trained strongly alongside AFL counterpart Ty Vickery during the week.

The young forward will look to hit the scoreboard again on Saturday night at Simonds Stadium when the Tigers take on the Cats for the second time this season after defeating them by 51-points at home in Round 5.

Liam McBean
2 goals, 7 disposals, 4 marks
Reasonably quiet. Competed well and hit the scoreboard but we also expect a better performance from him.

or

Liam McBean
4 goals, 12 disposals (9 contested), 3 marks
Another solid game in terms of scoreboard involvement. Played in the ruck due to Shaun Hampson’s late injury, which was a new role for him. It helped him get more contested possessions up the ground but we still want him marking the ball. Took three but we want that number to be seven to ten.

or

Liam McBean
4 goals, 9 disposals, 6 marks
Very good game in terms of hitting the scoreboard. The most pleasing thing for Liam was his three contested marks, which go a long way towards him pushing for senior selection.

or

Liam McBean
5 goals, 10 disposals, 5 marks
Made the most of his opportunities on the night but took a little bit to get going in the first half. Had a massive third quarter where he kicked three of his five goals. Constantly kept leading up the ground, which is what we expect him to do.

Imagine the reviews if the above output was achieved by Morris. Talk about messiahs!!

Another link below with Clarke discussing Beanie in 2013. Has video of his game just before he did his ankle. I dont think his mobility has got back to that level.

This article sums up Liam's dillemma as viewed by Hardwick. He does too much fancy stuff and he has simplified (richmondised) his game to marks goals defensive pressure. No lairisin'

Young Richmond forward Liam McBean says he’s working hard on deficiencies in his game, to ready himself for a potential opportunity at senior level.

While he has been hitting the scoreboard at VFL level in the last month, he has taken on board the feedback he has received from Damien Hardwick and the development coaches.

"The amount of goals I was kicking was probably the same amount I gave away from not being switched on defensively," he said of his form earlier this season.

"There's been stages this year where I've looked a little bit uncompetitive and I've spoken to 'Dimma' a lot about second and third efforts, just to show that desperation.

"'Dimma' has shown a lot of faith in me, and I've worked a lot on just changing my mindset and being more aware and not letting my defenders run the ball out of the backline."

Contested marking has been the other key focus for McBean, who acknowledged he needed to take more marks in pack situations or bring the ball to ground.

He said he had made an effort to simplify his football, which had been the main reason for his recent good form.

"Sometimes I try to do a little bit too much," McBean said.

"I've spoken to 'Clarkey' (VFL coach Tim Clarke) a few times about trying to keep inside the box.

"There were definitely times when I had shots on goal when I wasn't in the right spot and I'd try to do too much with the ball and wouldn't pick the right targets.

"Now my game is about marks, goals, and applying defensive pressure."

Recruited with pick No.33 in the 2012 AFL Draft, McBean was developing well as VFL level in his debut season last year, before he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

Subsequent surgery restricted him through the pre-season and the 19-year-old's 2014 campaign was interrupted by a finger operation mid-year.

Despite that setback, McBean has booted 20 goals in the past five VFL matches to lead the goalkicking in the state league, with 33.
