Liam McBean

Oh my god.

*McBean's done nothing in the twos. Let's see him dominate VFL before giving him an AFL game.*

He's kicked 74 goals in 29 VFL games, all before he turned 20. There's probably two blokes in the VFL who have kicked as many goals as him in that time. Maybe none.

LOL - how quickly some forget

I wonder, inconsistent with conventional wisdom, whether McBean's style and skillset is better suited by the headless chook gamestyle of the VFL? He's not really a traditional lead, mark and kick forward. He relies more on losing his man in traffic, kicking on the run.

I wonder whether AFL defences are too structured for McBean to translate his skills effectively?

You cant learn sum mugs!

He's done nutin' at senior level they cry! Er duh, my ma has never made good scones on Mars.

Let him dominate at VFL level first they shriek. Top VFL goal kicker the last two years as a skinny teeenager in bottom 4- 6 sides aint enough.

Meanwhile Griff plys his wares despite never kicking multiple bags of 4, 5 and 6 like Beanie has at VFL level.

Vickery was an automatic selection for years despite never kicking multiple bags of 4, 5 and 6 like Beanie has at VFL level.

Stone the flamin' crows!!!

I think Foley provided the answer on Saturday.

Beanie pretty invisible first half.

Nath comes on at half time and wins quality clearances and sets up the outside guys and Beanie has 4 marks and 4 shots on goal in the third quarter.

Beanie is a natural forward. he has always played with a midfield that kicks the ball poorly and moves it slowly. Surround him with some silk and he'll deiliver big time.

Playing him in the seniors won't help him then. They kick the ball poorly and move the ball slowly as well.

;D

Yes McBeast with thrive having the ball kicked on his head.
Honestly I hope he gets an AFL game soon so that this debate actually has some substance.

You have a point there Lids and Martin sure aren't Luke Conca and Pat Contin.

It's not hard to imagine how a forward might improve with better delivery.

The VFL team is woeful. McBean's still kicking goals.

The only thing holding him back is the coach refusing to select him.

It's hard not to imagine how a VFL forward would find it harder to cope with more disciplined, stronger, faster and bigger defenders.

You should get to more reserve games Antman and see the burdens young Liam is faced with.

I'm a bit bewildered at your support of Liam compared to your lack of support for Alex. Different players I know but if certain PREnders had their way Alex would have had a very short career. I hope the powers to be manage Liam, and Liam does enough himself, to go on and be as good a player as Alex is for us.

Doesn't want it enough, and hasn't worked hard enough. Have been told this by a mate who works at the club.

Having said that, our VFL/ressies have hardly been an adequate breeding ground for young talent over the past couple of years. Not sure what Tim Clarke's credentials are apart from playing 90 odd games for Hawthorn.

Might explain why Morris, Newman, Grigg etc keep getting games.

Liam should be aiming to become our number one ruckman, relief forward, Griffiths key forward relief ruck. That would be a tantalizing prospect if they both developed. Liam was recruited as a developing ruckman and glimpses of some of his tapwork both in the forward line and occasionally in center square shows it is not beyond him. But maybe due to some early success as a forward, (albeit VFL level), he has got ahead of himself & maybe would prefer to be a lazy forward rather than putting in the work to become the next Dean Cox?

Unless Griffiths starts taking games by the scruff of the neck I can't see Liam also playing in the same side. Not sure we can afford to have two quite inexperienced talls in the line up at this stage. Not unless we're tanking. Is that allowed these days?

Alex is a marvel who proved me comprehensively wrong.

I love him.

It wasn't a question of support though Rosy. We all support the players that wear the colours.

It was simply my opinion on his chances of success which was wrong.

How did he go in the praccy matches , was always 10 yards behind an opponent and always lost the one on ones

So you're saying the forward had 10 yards separation on his opponent. Who did we kick it to?

Can he cope with stronger bodied defenders? Maybe this is part of the problem. Those who get along to training might know if the likes of Rance etc are just toweling him up in game sims.

He and Mackenzie are lucky they have Rancey to towell them up (as i assume he would) at training. Worth years of development.

true but can he handle a bigger body?
